Getting over the "working out of your home" hump.

if the only "chemical" you use with water is a biodegradable car wash soap while in your driveway that runs into your grass..... which is a minimal amount, is it really a big deal? i wouldnt think so if it is biodegradable and you are only working out of your home part time... (not doing 3 cars per day).. for instance i do about 1 car a weekend.

This has been discussed at length before and it will probably be debated over and over during the coming years. Check out this website: http://www.riversides.org/riversafe/

That's the lowdown on chemical runoff into ditches, storm drains etc.... and anyone who doesn't get with the program is eventually going to be out of business. Los Angeles is already fining detailers $1000.00 per infraction for not capturing and properly disposing of wash water - NO WARNINGS. This is coming and anyone who sticks their head in the sand will be left in the dust of the guys who are proactive and start obeying the law BEFORE the government makes them. The commercial carwash industry are not going to tolerate having to jump through hoops to reclaim their water or pay inordinate fees to hook up to city sewers while other businesses wash cars in the street and flaunt the same laws they are subject to.

great site.. very useful information. i always thought that since the soap was biodegradable it was no problem. i only thought that wheel cleaners and such were a problem.

IMO I feel working out of the home is a "gotta see it to believe it" type thing. If your advertising by flyer or whatever means really and your handling you business by the phone I would exect customers (especially those with high end cars who expect professionalism) to be weary of you working out of your home garage. I wouldn't expect that to come from any of your *reference* business, but from new customers yes.

That is one of the main reasons why I decided to go mobile. It just seems more *prefessional* even in my own eyes. Next winter I may see about working out a deal with a shop in the area to rent out a small portion if they have the space for winter detailing....for my regulars anyways. I don't promote myself too much in the winter because it's cold and I don't detail below 40 degrees (just personal preference), so rescheduling makes it a little difficult also. But for the most part mobile has worked out for me thus far. I am a recent weekend warrior pushing into the market. My big area will be boats this summer.

Thats just my two cents. The way I prefer to do things and my personal reasoning! Hope that helps.
