gentle shampoo

I know this is a newb question but bare with me.



The P21S Shampoo is a very gentle shampoo that won't strip wax for at least a few washes so I understand. Are there any other shampoos that are very gentle like this one?



On the flip side, when it's time to remove wax to go again, is it best to do the dawn method, use a harsh car wash solution, or just wait until the wax wears on it's own then do another coat or polish/wax whatever you're situation may be.

Meguiar's Hi-Tech #00 (OTC)

P21S Bodywork

Griot's Car Wash

Sonax Gloss Shampoo



Dawn has a tendency to dry out the rubber. I prefer to polish out with a PC (1-2X/year) when the time comes.
 
I really like anything from driven to perfection, 200mph, prima, einszett, jeff's werkstatt and duragloss

Plus I am now working with lavender and coconut based hair shampoo's and conditioners that have no chemicals or sodium

It's really helping with slickness.
 
The most gentle shampoo, IMHO, is baby shampoo. It's safe, clean, suds very well, it's cheap, and it will not strip wax. Hell, u can even splash it in your eyes and you won't feel it :lol



Follow up with some quick detailer and you are all set. I follow this regimen on all my vehicles and I find the wax just lasts and lasts. When it comes time to strip off the wax and start fresh, I usually use Dawn and it strips it all away. I know Dawn is kinda hard on rubber but I only do that about twice a year.
 
rexdriver85- I can confirm jmsc's recommendations of Meguiar's #00 and Griot's. The #00 is an *especially* mild shampoo and might not even be strong enough for regular washes. The Griot's always seems unusually gentle on my LSPs and is what I use 99.999% of the time. Meg's #62 is pretty mild too.



The only times I strip the exsisting LSP is if I notice some nasty marring while the LSP is still very healthy. A *very* healthy LSP (e.g. layered KSG) can clog up polishing pads so I'll compromise it with some rubbing alcohol/AutoInt's ValueGuard New Car Prep/etc. first. But most of the time I wait until the LSP is on its last legs anyhow and I just polish through it. IMO Dawn's abilities as a LSP-stripper are vastly over-rated, but David B. has had good results with it by using it *straight*...remember to rinse rinse rinse if you try that ;)

ever since i've started reading autopia i've realized there's alot more to this than i ever knew. all the manufacturers and different products, it's confusing at the least! haha
 
Yeah so much information on here. I've been overwhelmed bc I'm new too. From what I'm understanding, once you get your needs down...its all preference.
 
I'm curious to know how you all feel about the harshness of the Meguiars NXT shampoo. I absolutely love this product, but I have heard someone say that it is hard on lsp's. Is there any truth to that statement. I was forced to use Megs Deep Crystal a couple of times since no NXT was available and had nowhere near the sudsing and lubricity of the NXT even when I used alot more soap than recommended. I don't see any evidence of it reducing the life of the lsp's that I use. Even after countless washes, the water still beads up like there is plenty of protectant left on the finish. Not sure how accurate it is to go by that though.

If it looks protected, and *feels* protected, then I'd assume that is *is* protected. If you like the product and it seems gentle enough to you, then I'd go by that and not by what other people say. Anyhow, there are a *lot* of variables in play here, from water quality to dilution strength, to dwell time and wash technique, to the specific LSP/shampoo interaction. If it works for you, well, that's what counts.

I have not tried a meguiars wash for probably seven years but my customers have told me some horror stories



One of them with a 72 MGB roadster showed me the original paint on it that got damaged with meg's soft wash gel (pink stuff)

it faded the until then, excellent condition paint and I had to machine polish it off with menzerna and clearkote



If any baby shampoo that doesn't contain sodium laureth sulphate or sodum lauryl can be found, I want some.

I have never found one.
