Generator

I rented the 17,500 version of this durring hurricane sandy and it ran for 2 weeks straight as long as I could find gas. Burned about 11 gallons per 24 hours if I recall. I think generac is a good solid name in generators (portables)

Mi Amigo -

This unit is going to supply 36.6 Amps at 120Vac.

If your panel is a 100Amp panel, you will be better than 50% as long as you dont run all the big 240Vac things - Dryer (if electric), Stove/Stovetop (if electric).

How are you going to use it ? Run a few things plugged into it with extension cords , through another smaller panel, or with a breaker that runs the entire power panel ?

Good luck, hope you dont even have to use it..

GET NATURAL GAS!

I have it an man has it been a god send. Hurricane sandy was a joke for me... the rest of my town... not so much.

JM ~ if your ever interested in see my setup your more than welcome to swing by.

I would also love natural gas if my generator install was permanent, and I was planning on living there forever..
They sell those big self contained metal enclosed gas powered units at Home Depot as well, I believe..

Very nice, but you have to plumb the gas line to them, but once set up, it is golden !

I am looking for a quiet generator to use here in the winter. Syracuse, NY. I would like to buy an inflatable tent and heat it up. Would need the generator to power up the blowers for the tent, run a heater and my various car detailing supplies. Suggestions? Brands? Prices? Where to buy?

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Get whatever Costco has (easy returns) or go big and get a Honda of the appropriate size.

How many watts do I need? I`ve been doing some research and am thinking at least 2000 or even 3000 if I want to run the blowers for the tent, space heater and vacuum, etc

You`ll need to get a wattage rating for all of the items you want to use and then figure out the size of generator you`ll need. You also need to realize electric motors require more power upon startup than normal running. Also, forget about using a space heater on a generator as that will be inefficient and you won`t be able to run anything else on your generator while using an electric space heater. You`d be better off using a propane space heater, which will also be safer than having an electric heater near water.

So figure out what equipment you`ll need to run at the same time off of the generator. And try to get things off of the generator. Not sure if this applies but instead of a compressor, you may want to get a large tank for compressed air and fill it up nightly using a larger compressor at home. Switch to cordless tools and charge the batteries at night. Etc. Etc.

You mean a heater like this?

What do you mean compressor? I have a shop back and a carpet shampoo machine I would need plugged in the generator. Or at least I thought I would. If I can`t power those things and the tent blow up fans then I might not need one at all..I have been using the customers power but would like to become totally self sufficient and be able to be truly mobile.

Sorry if I sound ignorant here. Just started exploring these options

Thank you for your input. Keep it coming!

Just used the compressor as an example of trying to come up with solutions for removing unnecessary electrical loads. The use of cordless tools is an example and then charge those at night. Then again, a tool charger doesn`t take much energy...but every little bit counts.

That is the sort of heater that would work or you could get one of the bullet-shaped construction heaters that would be lower and more stable; they even have some on wheels. I`d worry the one you linked might fall over and hit the tent and it would burn a hole in your tent in a second. Pay attention to the BTUs and you may need to do some research to find out how many BTUs you`ll need to heat the tent when you`re washing a car when it gets really cold out. You`ll also need a big enough tent to make sure the heater isn`t too close to the tent or it will melt and if too close to the vehicle, it could also damage the paint.

Figure out the number of items you`ll need on the generator and are using at the same time. And then focus on the set of equipment that takes the most power. As an example, I see the tent fan, vacuum, and carpet shampooer as two concurrent options. Size for the largest set that you`ll be using at the same time.

Option 1:
* Tent fan - 600w ???
* Vacuum - 1000w ???

Option 2:
* Tent fan - 600w ???
* Carpet shampooer - 1200w ???

In the example above, one assumption I`m making is that you will NOT run the vacuum and the shampooer at the same time. If that is true, for my fictional example, you`d use option 2 to size your generator since it is the largest power using set of equipment you`ll run at the same time. And then you`d use that max power set to size your generator. In this case you`d need 1800w continuous power but you can`t buy an 1800w generator or even a 2000w generator. You`ll probably want/need at least 30-40% additional power to give the generator head-room and to allow for additional power motors require upon startup. Your generator won`t last long if constantly running at full output.

One other thought. Will you really need a shampoo machine? Could you come up with another workflow that gives as good results without the need for another piece of equipment? I studied engineering in school and engineering is about building something efficiently. Many engineers can build a bridge that is incredibly strong and expensive but the difficulty is in building something strong enough while minimizing costs. As a professional detailer, you need to dial in your processes to minimize time and improve results. If a piece of equipment will make a huge difference for your customers and your bottom line, then include it. But you really need to look at every single piece of equipment to validate it is absolutely needed. This makes sense from an initial investment standpoint as well as long term return.

I wasn`t planning planning on washing the car inside the tent. I was going to wash it outside. Or rather rinse it and pull it in to dry it off. I was thinking of using a waterless car wash spray.

Yes I need the carpet shampoo machine. I do have a small steam cleaner but I primarily use that to soften up the dirt and blow out any dirty from nookes and crannies.

Thanks again! Keep it coming. Can you or someone else recommend a tent? I was thinking of this one
