Just a note about checking your local building code. This issue comes up quite a bit on the various DIY forums. If you do any work on your home that does not meet your local code, there is a very good chance that you will not be able to make a successful claim on your homeowners insurnace policy, if the need arises. If a claims agent notices any code violations in your home, they can invalidate the claim.
Do you want to risk the liability if your neighbor's cat, or dog, or child decides to play Indiana Jones as your close your garage door and doesn't quite make it through.
For the extra 10-15 it would take to properly mount the sensors, you'd meet code and have that peace of mind.
