Garage opener Safety eyes

You know those little boxes that make the door go back up if something crosses in front of they eyes. As I just put 2 new doors up and I am looking at those eyes I cant stand them! I hate the wires and I also don’t like if the door is open and you walk under the door it turns the light on the opener on. Has anyone bypassed the eyes so you don’t have to have them? I know that some people mount them on the wall and such, I don’t want to have them at all. I have had a garage with openers for 7 years with out them and never had a problem.







PS I have no children and live in a area with little or no people with children.
 
As you have said, some ppl put them on the wall, this might be your only option. Coil up the wires neatly and leave them on top of the opener box in the center of the garage. This way the electronics of the opener will not be tampered with, and with them out of the way, they will not activate.

well... essentially only one of the eyes is doing the "functional part" of the job.... the sensor inside the one eye detects a signal being sent out by the other eye's transmitter. So all you need to do is figure out which one is the sensor end, and use a multimeter to find out what the reading (in ohms) the sensor gives out when the circuit is closed, virsus when its open (i.e. when something blocks its path). Then you can get a resistor and solder it into the line in place of the box, and tuck the wire up inside the opener. Then, voila- your openers always think there's no blockage of the door path, and you don't have to worry about the boxes or other nuissance again!

What I did is instead of wiring everything i just mounted them to the top of the opener, so they would line up.



I too have no kids etc. But i kept all the brackets etc incase I need to wire them up to pass a home inspection when we move.

I suggest checking local building codes first........



It may be required to have them functioning......



At least when you sell the house.....

Just mounted them in the attic facing eachother, not much more to do, I did leave all the extra wire attached so that in the future I could put them up for code if need be ;)

Your garage door opener is brand new from Sears! I have a Genie and it's a few years old but works and I keep it very clean. How did you direct the sensor "eye" wires to the attic? Did you drill one or two holes in your ceiling and then run the wires up thru threre?

I ran the wires through the hole in the Ceiling that the power wire, and the wall monted control wires run through. 1 hole.
 
If you someday have an operator problem, remember where those sensors are. A friend of mine mounted his facing each other in somewhat the same way as TJ98Cobra. When he had an operator problem, he found that one of them had been knocked out of alignment some way. He almost forgot they were even there. Out of sight, out of mind.

As some of you know I responded to a post a while back to a guy thinking of painting his garge floor and I responded.....



My floor looks great....... but I will NEVER do it again......



However, just noticed the other day my house has shifted (this is normal for a newer home) and the cement floor moved and now this cracked and seperated the commercial epoxy $100.00 paint....... so now I have another problem and no way in hell I'm gonna scrape it all up..... Went back my local Pro paint store, NOT HOME DEPOT and purchased some oil based same color type paint and I wil try to touch it up but it will NEVER look the same and long term it wil probably not stick to the cement......

Most likely this will not pass an inspection, but I would do the same if I had a garage. How much force does the opener exert any way, 15lbs? At some point they stop and back off if an obstruction is felt. Some one put a bathroom scale on a stool and shut the door on it.



Note for users of this method: Clean out the area surrounding the sensors every once in a while. The cob webs combined with leaves can wind up fouling the whole system. Problems could be mounting, as shown in the picture by TJ98Cobra.

I agree that the little eyes are not attractive. But let me say a few things and let you make your own decision with a few things in mind:sosad:

1. They are not a car. When mounted correctly with the wires cut to length, no one notices them.

2. If you dont like the light turning on when you trip the beam, pick up your feet.

3. If you have kids and you decide to detail your car with part of the car sticking out of the garage, then go out in the back yard to move the sprinkler, then return to notice that one of your children has safely placed their bicycle back in the corner, safely away from your black 1968 Camaro, only to find that they were nice enough to remember to close the garage :scared (since you yell at them all the time to close the garage door so no one steals their toys.....i.e. your tools and cars (since you leave the keys in them), you will wish you still had the safety beams in the correct place.

4. In order to avoid 3, you can place your detail bucket in front of the beam to prevent such a thing :doh.

Evaluate these items before mounting the eyes in the attic.

So far I think I will be ok, I have no kids nor do I ever plan on having any. If I did they would have a heck of a time touching the wall mounted buttons, My girl friend is 5'3 and has to be on her tip toes to reach them....LOL
 
My apologies to anyone here regarding my last post in the Zymol thread. I want to continue to be apart of this forum and even though I don't see how my post was offensive I will apologize anyway....... All I ask is this forum be schill-free and every guy who posts gets the same respect. No question is a dumb question and we are all here to learn, together. I like a lot of you here have limited time. My time is money and I take time out of my personal time to contribute here. Please respect that.



Cad gives valid points with the "eyes". I'll still have to agree with Redcarguy on this one.



Or, why not just cut the ground, hide it and reset the memory. Just a thought.
