Garage Dogs, got one?

There is so much to know about doggie behavior that I'm continuously amazed at the breathe of knowledge of my trainer. Anyway, I believe this should help your situation. Good luck and please report back.
Today went better then other times .He still barked at me but only for a couple hours maybe instead of 7 hours straight non stop!

There was a note in the car that the dog threw up between the seat . I spent an entire hour cleaning up dog vomit in all the hard to reach places! I knew my sunset at the beach plan for later was toast!:(

Not only did I have to listen to him bark but I had also spend an extra 45 minutes cleaning up his dog hair dog hair too! I am liking this dog less and less!

Am sorry to hear what happened to you..

Am totally on board with what AddysDaddy -- do not acknowledge the dog, no eye contact, no talking to it, etc..

You also have to come in to that situation totally confident, not scared, no fear deep inside, you are the boss. You are not there to boss the dog, but you are the boss of your part there, and the dog if its not crazy, will acknowledge this in time.
I cant believe they would let it bark all day while you were working outside.
I have 2 purebred AKC registered German Shepherds, 1 East German, 1 West German, and they are also very protective of our house and inhabitants, and they will bark at strangers, especially if they are in the house, so I have to tell them either through a visual motion or vocally that it is ok, no barking, these people are "on the list", and then the dogs will "release" from barking.
Perhaps this dog owner needs to spend time working on this through the inside of his house, with the dog inside, and the dog will get it (hopefully).

I think its very rude and thoughtless of any owner to allow their dog/s to bark, etc., at strangers like when you are walking down the street and they are walking their dog.
I personally feel that the dogs that bark are not sure of themselves, do not get enought exercise, and maybe have become a little crazy from never being outside and getting exercised and disciplined. All dogs need a job - every day. If they have that they are way better off and so are the owners and people who come across them while they are on a leash.
My dogs see other dogs bark at them all the time when I am walking them and they just ignore them, cause they know they could eat that little barking furball in 1-2 bites.. :)

Perhaps suggest nicely to you Client that or ask if that dog has ever been to a school.. ?

You can usually tell by looking at a dogs body language what it is about to do, so the owner of this menace-in-training needs to also be trained in how to look for these tips.. But the absolute best thing for any dog is to get trained properly, and if its a big, strong, dog, you have to have a pinch collar on it when you walk it, otherwise, you may not be able to get its attention when you absolutely have to..

Good luck with this, sorry it had to happen to you..

Thanks Dan.

The owners arent usually there and are at work most of the day .That I beleive makes the dog even worse as far as protecting the house.

I talked at length about the dog with the wife when she came home. she even brought the dog to the vet because hes been acting nervous and extreemly protective lately but they told her he was fine.

She did mention getting a dog behaviorist and I agreed that was a good idea!:)

Well DetailChick, seems like u made a little progress on the last outing. Glad Stokdgs mentioned the confidence portion of the equation, as that is one of the essential elements to success. Stokdgs and I have the same breed of pups which "require" owner involvement and doggie training. Our dogs listen because we're on them 24/7 and they want to please us - as do all dogs. If the owners don't care what they're doing, then the dog will be as ill-mannered as a dog can possibly be. If the owner doesn't tolerate a certain behavior, the dog know that as well and will act accordingly. Sounds like your client is the type of owner that doesn't get involved. Hmmm, wonder how his kids are turning out?

It's really essential that you continue to exude confidence and ignore the dog completely in all manner of recognition. It make take several tries but this strategy will eventually work. Please keep us posted and we'll do our best to help.

Love Henny Janes new pic!

I love dogs but last week one of my customers dogs attacked me for no reason! Luckily it only tore my pant leg and wouldnt let go .The owner had to pull the neurotic dog off me.

sorry to hear about that DC. bad owner not bad dog. dogs are bad when theyre owners mistreat them. everyone thats here is surprised at my pits personality. to be honest, i dont like it bc shes too friendly but theres nothing im going to do to try to change that. i like her the way she is. if theres a problem shell take care of it n whoever she would take care of would deserve it for sure. of course if i didnt trust her around other people then i would keep her chained up like a real zoo animal but she is a dog n she needs to have her freedom so i give it to her. my dog is very well behaved, watches me work & will sit there like a statue & just watch me.

i wouldnt do any other work for that customer unless the dog is put away/chained up while your there. work is work but its not worth if if you feel like your going to get attacked by the guys dog.

on our way to the first meet of the season a few weeks ago. i hold the back of her head as i drive, stick a finger or 2 under her collar. she just sits there like a person lol.

I just love Heny Jane!! :inspector:

Too bad she will not have any cute puppies!

I've been kind of quiet in this thread simply because I don't have a dog. Let me clarify here. I don't have a dog living in my house. I developed a bit of property a few years back and built a home right next door to my parents, who are now in their 80's. The literally live on the other side of the wall, about 30 yards away. They have a little poodle that I take care of everyday. She loves me and can't wait to see me. She always brings me a toy and wants to play. I love dogs and cats for that matter. Between the two houses we have 6 cats. I go for a 5 mile walk 6 days a week and have several homes that I stop by just to pet their dogs or cats. These animals know me, they expect me and one dog would be genuinely disappointed if he didn't see me daily.

As a kid growing up, we always had Weimaraners. Big, gentle dogs. Sometimes called the Gray Ghost their coats often bled more into a tan than gray color.

My whole point in this post was that DC had sparked a memory for me. We found that letting these female dogs have one litter of pups before neutering them made them much more friendly and loving animals for the rest of their lives. It wasn't hard to find good homes for papered pups. Something about setting the mother instinct in them. We sure had some good dogs.

just got a new rescue pooch last month after my min pin of 13yrs passed away from cancer back in march. that was a heart breaker. "scrappy", the new min pin mix was a stray down in miami when he was rescued by the internet mini pinscher service back in nov. of last year. poor thing had contracted heart worms but they were able to treat him in time. he's doing great now and adores my bulldog molly. i'm always amazed that dogs can rebound from a hard life on the streets and turn out so loving. as you can see, they have it pretty hard at my house.
