Fun pic from yesterday

Okay, managed to get my car back from the professional detailer today who was doing a swirl removal job on my car. I've got a black 97 VW GTI and had a huge amount of swirls in my paint.

When I picked up the car today, when I saw it I almost wet myself. It looked so good.. but I knew it looked a little TOO good. So when I paid the detailing, they told me they also added a glaze to the paint to help finish it off. I explicitly told them to only do a car wash, clay and swirl removal, but hey, they charged me the same price.

When I came home from work today, I washed the car down with dawn and managed to dry the car okay. If you've been following my other threads, I was asking how to dry the car if it's too cold. Well it turns out my underground parkign garage at my apartment is warmer than I thought and I dried it no problem ith 1 bath towel, 1 absorber and a small MF. :up

After the dawn wash I noticed swirls popping up in the paint.. swirls I didn't see when I picked the car up -- hidden by the glaze they applied! :( But nevertheless, it was probably 80% better than when I started. You can only see the swirls less than 2 feet from the car, so I'm not too worried.

I started applying Z5+Zfx and since I have a black car, I didn't have any problems getting the coats really thin. I managed to do 3 coats + my wheels with less than 2 oz! :D Thanks for the tips in this forum, I used a foam pad that was sprayed with Z6. Made application a cinch. But it helped that I have black paint and could easily see how much was being applied.

After 3 coats, all I can say is WOW. My car looks amazing. While you can still see some swirls, the improvement is unreal. The car is shining like crazy! :up What I did notice however, is that it is a real "flat" shine and not anywhere near the deep wet shine of a carnuba. However, I'd trade the carnuba wet shine for the longevity of Zaino!

It's completely dark outside and my underground garage is poorly lit with fluroscent lights... but here's a shot of my hood:

It's probably going to rain for the next week or so, so I won't be able to take better pictures. However, I will be posting up my thoughts on how water is beading up and how dirt is repelled!

Thanks everyone for all your help!!

This is exactly why they didn't charge you extra. :D But heck, you are looking under fluorescent light!

Nevertheless, great mirror shine! :up

Is it easier to notice swirls under fluroscent light vs. sunlight?

Yes, very much so. You can take a car that looks perfect out in the sunlight and when you put it under fluroscent's you will want to cry. :(

To tell you the truth, they still did a decent job, I was expecting alot worse ........... I have seen alot worse. Hopefully when everything he applied is stripped off you have a decent base to start with. That would make it easier for you and you'll get more value of the money you spent.

I used to spend 180.00 for interior and exterior! hahah

I seem to disagree. With my experience, fluorescents are excellent for finding contaminates or oxidation. However, bright sunlight seem to highlight more minor swirls when looked at carefully. And powerful 1000w halogen spotlights are simply the best for finding swirls.

You’ll be amazed at how much you’re “scratching the paint every single time you wash or wax under the halogens. But then if you polish weekly to get rid of each minor “scratch, I wonder how much clear would be left...

:D

At least the detailer didn't take off your clear coat like one did to my tailgate! Sure, the swirls were gone, but so was the gloss.

I don't think I would have come back

*News Flash* A detailer was handed the keys to a new Corvette ZR-1. The owner of the car was expecting to get his car cleaned but instead he got a whiff of exhaust and tire smoke, authorities report. Police helicopters tracked the stolen Corvette east of State Road 345, were it entered the highway and proceeded to light speed, leaving behind to burning strips of rubber. We have reason to believe it was transporting cases of Coors beers across state lines to Texarcana..

We believe Dr. Emmet Brown was on board, hooking up the rumored flux capaciter in an attempt to wrinkle the space time continuim and save Marty from Biff. Stay tuned for further updates.

Yes, but unfortunately it seems that Chewy dropped the spanner and now the ZR1 is left dodging asteroids while be chased by a Super Star Destroyer... That's okay because Maverick is planning an inverted roll which should put the ZR1 behind the Mig and give it perfect radar 'tone' for an AIM7 Sparrow to fly right up the tail pipe and send the rest of the Mig's bugging out.

Seriously, this is a glimpse into my brain, and it's scary.
