Full paint correction and then some!! *56k beware*

First, let me say I'm not a professional detailer and this is only my 3rd full correction detail. I was really happy with the results and welcome any constructive criticism. I'm an American detailer, but I LOVE your website and have learned a lot.

My mother owns a 2006 Nissan Maxima and intends to sell the car and buy something new in the coming months. She maintains the car pretty well, but it does not live in a garage, has never been waxed, and gets death tunnel washed half the time and washed at a hand car wash place with grimy towels and sponges half the time. She also has hedges at the end of her driveway that get dragged along the sides of the car with regularity! You'll see the evidence of this shortly.

I wanted to try a couple things with the car that I haven't done before so this was the perfect test mule. Mainly, I wanted to Plasti Dip the black trim below the windows and in the fender wells.

I drove an hour each way to trade cars with my mother for a week and worked on her car after my job each weekday and a full day on two Sundays.

Befores:

I picked the leaves and straw out by hand, used a leaf blower to get another large amount out, then vacuumed out the rest. Next, I sprayed dilute Meguiar's APC Plus liberally on the engine and then agitated with various brushes. I then sprayed 303 protectant liberally all over the engine, shut the hood, and let it idle for about 15 minutes while I started working on the wheels. This is one new technique I wanted to try and I think it came out great! I very quickly wiped it down to even out the gloss with an all purpose microfiber.

engineclean2.jpg

engineclean1.jpg

The wheels are up next. I removed them from the car so I could first clean them with APC, then about 3 hits of Sonax, then about 4 hits of Tarminator, another round of APC, and then Adam's sealant on the barrels. I later hand polished the outer portion of the wheels with a microfiber cloth and Meg's 105.

dirtywheel.jpg

dirtywheel2.jpg

I didn't worry about every little nook and cranny that you can't see when they're on the car because my mother will never even notice the 4 hours I spent on them as it is.

cleanwheel.jpg

I then went on to clean the exterior of the car with Dawn dish soap with a kick of APC for the heck of it. I then clayed it with an Adam's clay bar. Check out the contamination.

Clean clay bar and dilute Adam's detail spray as lube:

cleanclay.jpg

After only doing the hood:

dirtyclay1.jpg

Folded it around right before doing the rear bumper and vertical portions of the back of the car:

dirtyclay2.jpg

Yikes! That's just contamination off of the back of the car.

I cleaned all shuts, caps, etc with dilute APC and a Swissvax brush (GREAT brush):

gascap.jpg

doorsillbrush.jpg

brushgrill.jpg

And this car was dirty! Check out behind the front license plate frame and look at the dirt that dropped to the ground when I removed it:

frontplatedirt.jpg

The exhaust tips weren't horrible, but I used Adam's metal polish #1 and some 000 wire wool to clean them.

After:

I'm not really going in order for this one, but here is the mess around and in the trunk:

trunkshutdirty2.jpg

trunkshutdirty1.jpg

This mat was stained beyond repair. I considered trying to dye it back to stock, but I found a guy parting out a Maxima and bought a mat in good shape for $15.

Pulled the leaves out, air blower, vacuum, APC and brush:

So, at this point I felt like doing some interior work. We thought here interior was a tan color, but it turns out it's more of a cream after 6 years of getting wiped down at the local hack job hand-wash place. I used a leather brush, dilute APC, and then wiped clean with a microfiber. Later, I dressed it with Adam's leather conditioner which is one of my favorite Adam's products. I used tape to make nice 50/50 shots.

Piece of tape around the wheel and cleaned around it:

General after shot:

Here's another little jewel I uncovered. I found out that this nasty grey and fading strip had some attractive chrome underneath when I was machining the paint. I decided to tape off either side of the strip and later use my wire wool and then microfiber cloth to polish it up beautifully.

polish5050chrome.jpg

Another 50/50:

Besides the 20 or so hours of machine polishing, my favorite part of this detail was the use of Plasti Dip to freshen some plastic trim.

Plastic strip below the window before:

Taping up for it:

Afters of this strip:

I also wanted to fix up the fender wells because they were faded and looked horrible. Here they are clean, but faded:

wheelwelldirty3.jpg

Taped them off too:

And looked better than brand new again:

I used Adam's super VRT on this because it's an awesome product and looks great. I also used it on the area around the wipers. I even hand polished the wiper arms with a microfiber cloth and Meg's 105 which is a godsend for a DA polisher.

Before:

After:

cleanwindowtrim.jpg

cleanwindowtrim2.jpg

So now it's machine polishing time!

I messed around first getting the haze off of the headlight. I made a little square and hit it once in this shot:

Here was a before:

Remember how I said she dragged her car along her hedges?

Also a nice scratch on the mirror:

My compounding combination for my Porter Cable is Tuf Buf 5" wool pads and Megs 105 which is just a wicked combo for a DA polisher, imo. I need to try the Meg's microfiber system that I have sitting my sun room.

Came out nicely:

As did the others:

As did this one:

Sadly, I didn't have a chance to take many afters as I had to rush to hit the road to make it to Albany in time to go out to eat with my family. Here are a couple quick shots before we traded out cars. I finished it off with Adam's machine super sealant, buttery wax, and then detail spray. I save my Americana for my car. I just ordered a TON of new products including Victoria Concours which should look nice on my black graphite metallic car!

Thanks for reading. This my first full detail post and I hope it wasn't too long and you enjoyed it. Please comment because I have a lot to learn! I don't have a lot of shots under the halogens, but I promise you I was checking every set with an IPA wipe down and the halogens.

Pretty astounding results. Keep us up-to-date as to whether or not Mom still wants to sell her car after that job.

Great Job, now did you trim the hedges..I would recommend that in your next write up LOL with all that work you should definitely remove the source of the "problem"...also was the plasti-dip a aerosol or did you use a brush I curious to know how you did such a job with such a tight amount of space between the wheel and the fender well

Very nice! It is incredibly satisfying to turn around a car like that.

It is unfortunate that people often wait until they plan to sell a car to make it look good.

I sir, am impressed!

Your attention to detail and this being your 3rd full detail in incredible.

My 1st couple true details were my families cars as well. Heck, thats how I got to drive the cars when I turned 16(27yrs ago).

Have any details of the 1st two? Please tell me your mom didn't 'shrub' your car while she had it?

Wow, great job! I love big turn around cars like this! In a month I'll be in our new apartment with a garage and I'll finally have the space to bring back my beater.

Excellent work!

Love the engine bay technique. It's one I've used for years. I'm still amazed when I pop the hood open!

Very nice work. Great attention to the small things to really make it stand out.

I agree. It's all about the details. I didn't take pictures of or describe half of the little detail items I did such as claying and hand polishing the door sills, cleaning the carpets, scrubbing literally every interior piece of the interior that wasn't cloth, protecting every bit of cloth with 303 cloth guard, etc.

Nice work Chris! Definite turnaround. The 50/50's came out great. Mom must be happy. :)

She still wants to sell it, but she was VERY pleased and surprised at how well it came out.

I used the aerosol Plasti Dip and love the product.

I agree, but it is what it is.

Looks great! Interesting choice to use Plasti-Dip for the trim.

Thanks, I was thrilled with how it came out and since it's basically aerosol rubber, the trim dressings look great on it.

JohnKleven said:
Excellent work. That plasti dip was a great idea.

Thanks, I can't take credit for the idea as I've seen it done before on trim. I haven't seen it down on fender wells though so I guess I can take credit for that! lol

I didn't take nearly as many pictures, but I'll definitely make another post about machine polishing my car. I also machine polished my Corian counters in the kitchen to a beautiful finish!

You wouldn't believe it, but she "shrubbed" the heck out of my car! It's all good though as I want to try out my new Meg's microfiber system so I'll get those out easily.

The garage makes a huge difference.

great job on that interior! WOW.. Hey, what paint did you use on the rubber molding outside the window? I need to do that to my car

Heh, when you mentioned swapping cars for a week I could see that coming. Being a preemptive type of guy, before Mom brings a new ride home I'd be out there with a chainsaw cutting 'em off at grade with extreme prejudice. But that's just me.

Nice job!

Plasti Dip. You can buy it at Home Depot or Lowes. Great product! There are plenty of videos about it on youtube.

Well, I figured she's pay more attention when entering/exiting and it wouldn't be a problem. I never hit them when I come and go. I guess I was wrong!

Don't worry, I have a beastly Echo gas hedge trimmer that is going to give those shrubs hell the next time I'm in Albany.

Great Job! Looks fantastic! Plasti-dip is very interesting choice, make me think....I had plasti-dipped my Lancer front end, the stuff is great!
