free Random Orbital buffer

i was given 2 free random orbital buffers, a 6 inch and a 10 inch . i did a search on buffers and only get stuff about the Porter Cable kind. i don't have enough money to go buy a PC. i'm on a budget right now. i have been using Meguiars 3 step,applying and buffing by hand. i know that these buffer that i got for free aren't the greatest but can anyone give me some tips on getting the best usage out of them. i'm a rookie when it comes to detailing. especially with machine buffers. the buffers came with 2 terry cloth bonnets and a half used bottle of 3M Fine rubbing compound too. any tips would greatly be appreciated
 
not owning any power tools like this myself, I can't help you a lot, but I can say that the 6" might be your best bet since it takes quite a motor to move a 10" pad around.



If you post the names of the two models we might be able to give you a little more insight and suggestions about them.



the main advantage of power is the ability to do work. Using a product with one will take a lot longer with a weaker one than with a stronger one. It seems the general concensus her that weak orbitals aren't fit for much more than waxing.
 
Take the two and make a hybrid. Put the 6" pad on the 10" motor. :D No, in all reality, the 6" would be your best bet, but I doubt it has the power to remove any swrils or light marring. Those buffers would best be left to liquid wax application, and at that point, going by hand is almost faster because of the time you will spend cutting in by hand.
 
Could you look on the sides of the machines and tell us what speed (OPM) they are and how many amps they have? That might help decide between them.



I would guess you should attempt to do what you normally try and do with most polishes (hand or machine, doesn't matter) - work them until they start to dry. It couldn't hurt to try...
 
I used a Waxmaster 10 inch random orbital buffer for over ten years. It is a great old machine. I still have it (as well as a new Porter Cable). It's not a PC but it's a heck of lot less work than hand polishing, waxing and buffing. Meguiar's products work great with this old style buffer.
