Four Star UPP Compatibility

A couple months back I applied Collinite 845 to my car, and I want apply something else in a couple weeks that I have. I was wondering, can I apply Four Star UPP over 845 without having to do a citrus wash, or something else to try and rid the 845 first?

Since it is a liquid paint sealant, it is not going to play well on top of 845. A strong citrus wash, dawn dish soap, or a IPA wipe down is needed. Not much is mention about 4 star but you have a fine product.

RedlineIRL- I never tried that particular combo, but UPP *CAN* have issues with underlying products; it didn't work well over 1Z *consumer line* MP, but works fine over their Pro version (which only has "synthetic" waxes as opposed to the consumer stuff's "natural" ones).

UPP will not perform properly applied on top of 845:

- Strong Citrus Wash or use your shampoo with a few ounces of APC...if you have a foam gun, spray and allow to dwell on the paint surface. In my experience, soap/surface dwell time is the key to stripping a previous layer of wax/sealant

- I am testing some 845 on my minivan and find it to be one of the few LSPs that can last through a dawn wash.

In any case, I love me some UPP - somewhat of an oldie, but goodie.

I've been loving it on the S8 for years, but I'm starting to consider switching to something else due to UPP's mediocre durability (at least with the way I wash) and its lousy protection against stuff like bug-etching

Out of curiosity, have you tried the updated formulation with polycharger? I still have and use the old non-polycharged version and I agree with you that durability is definitely lacking.

No, I haven't tried the newer PolyCharged version either. Heh heh, I still have a *LOT* of my v2.0 and v3.0 to use up!

I'd expect the PC'ed version to last a lot longer, completely forgot about that update when I posted about the durability.

I was afrd that was going to be the case, kind of not looking forward to that. I have notcied in the past it takes a few washes to totally rid the 845.

Is there really any sealant that plays well on top of 845? Blackfire WD, etc?

845 is a tough, durable sealant, so it's tough to remove (what we really want).

Try some prepsol solvent...that should do the trick.

Why not just leave the 845 alone? IMO it's kinda a "hybrid" LSP, not all that different from a "sealant". If you don't like the look that's one thing, but otherwise I can't understand why you'd want to replace/top it

Just wanting to try something different to add more brightness and gloss. 845 does work alright, but it seems to give a darker appearance IMO. I was hoping that 845 could be used as a base durabale layer while being topped with something that makes the finish the dripping depth look

RedlineIRL- Ah, OK. FWIW, I always considered 845 to be a little "bright" and I can't say I ever noticed any darkening..well, at least not like some other products can do. When you're after a very specific look, it can be tricky to find the right combo of the desired attributes!

Maybe darkening isn't the right term then. My car is red, but naturally has an orange tint depending on how you look at it. With 845 it seems to hide the orangeness, but still has an overall decent look. I guess you can say that the 845 kind mutes the look if that makes sense. I know what you mean about looks I haven't really found a LSP that has 100% impressed me, but I am usually my own biggest critc when detailing

Yeah, with all such subjective things *you* are the "subject" so it's *your* take on it that counts.
