Foam Gun: What shampoo are you using?

Just picked up a 2006 Evo IX MR SE in Graphite Grey. I'm a longtime Zaino fan and will be going through the process this weekend... I'm also going to pick up a foam gun from autogeek.

With my car being new, I want to use a shampoo that is gentle, appropriate for a foam gun (lots of suds!), slick, and most importantly won't strip Zaino.

Any suggestions?

I've looked at the DP Xtreme Foam stuff.. I can't help but feel that this is too harsh of a shampoo.. Also have looked into the Poorboys SS&S..

Suggestions please!!

Thanks! :getdown

I like Meg's GC...even if it is "just an OTC soap"...I use Z-2-5 and wash both my car and truck once a week, the Zaino is beading water just the same as the day I applied it (4.5 months ago).

I used NXT as well as Z-7 for a while, however I like GC better than both.

PS

I always feel like a giant beer can will fall on top of me if I refer to my "car wash soap" as "shampoo"....maybe it's just me :chuckle:

Congrats on the purchase! My buddy had an Evo just like it (same color), but already totaled it! Dont do that please. lol

My favorite car wash is Poorboy's SS&S, so that is what I usually use in the foam gun also. I haven't really had a problem using any of the soaps I have laying around in the gun, and often I use something different (to use it up) if I'm washing a beater or plan to do a polish/wax after the wash.

How do you use a foam gun? I have one lying around from other things but never got to use it. Do you only put Soap in the container or mix it with some water first?

It depends on the wash you are using, thick ones like Gold Class won't draw properly unless you dilute them down with water. I have used thin washes like Turtle Wax Platinum straight, you just have to adjust your orifice settings.

I think this is a decent wash, didn't streak, don't know what would happen if I had used the concentration they recommended. I started a thread about it here . IMO you can do better price-wise.

I use the Duragloss shampoo in the foamer...I have a pressure washer foam gun...really foams and is like oil on the paint..very slick....

The NXT shampoo I find very harsh on LSP's...

The Turtle Wax Platinum I found is not bad..better than the NXT...good slickness..and leaves a nice finish...

The GC to me leaves something on the finish...do not know if it is the conditioner they say it has...but the finish does not seem as slick after...

The Deep Crystal is not a good one....

Griots is good..but expensive..but very good..I compare it to the Duragloss....

I like a shamppo that feels like oil on the paint (lubricity)..and leaves a nice clean slick finish...

No shampoo with wax in it...cause after it dies..paint is grabby...from expired product...

Eagle one is another good one for the foam gun...

I use Griot's in mine. I mix 4-6 ounces to a gallon of water and fill the foamgun's bottle from that. I generally use the weakest mix but turn it up if a panel's really dirty.

Never tried Zaino, but the Griot's is extremely mild on KSG and pretty mild on carnaubas too. I especially like its lubricity.

artikxscout- I feel like I'm writing an encyclopedia every time I explain how to use the foamgun (or at least the way *I* use it). Do the dreaded search as it's important to use it correctly to get the real benefits it can provide. Takes a bit of practice and I don't mean just six or eight washes ;) but it's worth it when you don't have to polish out marring.

the thought of using a foam gun never occured to me until this post came up. Thanks for the reply, it's always nice to have someone througly explain process to you. I really think some things people post should become stickies. I forgot to do the search, so my fault on that.

Well, other than mixing up the shampoo I didn't explain anything all that thoroughly :o If you don't find what you need about how to use the foamgun post back or start another thread or something. The idea is to "dislodge and flush" as opposed to "scrub". Pressing the dirt against the paint and then moving the dirt is what causes wash-induced marring, so you need to minimize that.

I like TOL's Bubble Bath. Very slick, lots of suds, and doesn't strip anything. About 4 fingers of soap and the rest water. After the wash....4 fingers of makers mark, two maraschino cherries, and NO water. :)

So far, I've had good luck with:

Adams Car Wash Soap

Zaino Z7

Duragloss 901 car wash soap

I put anywhere from an ounce to 2 ounces of soap, add water to dilute, and set the dilution to 128:1. I've had no problems doing my 4Runner with my quart-sized bottle.
