Flexible Backplates

Hello all, newb here. I ve been lurking around this site for around a month now and ready to buy a PC. The only thing that is stoping me is deciding between a regular backplate or a flexible. Couldnt find anything in the search about flexible back plates, as far as the advantages of them or when to use them, could someone enlighten me? How does this sound as a beginner set, am I missing anything?:

PC 7336

5" velcro backplate

LC orange,white,black,terry cloth (2ea)

Thanks in advance

I prefer the 'flexiable' backing plate as * I * think it more forgiving that a rigid one.

If you decide to buy LC foam pads you might try the Constant Pressure Pad

Tilting the machine in any direction can result in an uneven and excessive pressure being transferred to the painted surface, or to the foam causing it to tear. Blue "Constant Pressure" foam backing absorbs any unwanted ‘off-axis’ polishing motions (ideal for the inexperienced user) they are available in the usual cutting/polishing foam (lakecountymfg.com)

Good luck with the new PC

Big P- Welcome to Autopia! I'll second the advice to skip the terry pads and to get the flex plate.

The terry pads can induce marring. If you want to use something like that, get MF bonnets that work over foam pads.

The flex plate doesn't seem to really *flex* all that much, but it's still a good plate. And it doesn't seem to vibrate as much as "regular" plates, perhaps due to its lighter weight (I weighed a bunch of my backing plates once at 4DSC's request, and the flex plate was pretty light).

Thanks for all your replies. I will get that flexible backplate. Are they all pretty much the same or do you all prefer a certain type or brand? Iam thinking 5" flexible backplate with 6.5 pads? Just inquired about the terry cloth bonnets because I wanted to use them to take off wax with the PC rather than do it by hand. Can you still use MF bonnets over the foam pads to take the wax off?

Deviating from the original post (flexible backing plates) somewhat, but if you use a flexible backing plate, a foam pad and a Microfiber bonnet that should steer it back on track-

Microfiber Buffing bonnets can be used after polishing to remove light polish residues. Then use it over a dense foam pad to produce a high gloss finish.

This doesn't load-up the bonnet with residue, as fast as a wool pad backing and the bonnet will need to be washed less often. These bonnets are a quick and effortless way to remove single-step products like Klasse Al1-In-One and Autoglym Super Resin Polish.

They also have just the right texture to apply a super thin layer of polymer sealants like, Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze, Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection or Zanio which require a very light coating for easy removal and best gloss.

A word of caution when using Microfiber bonnets to remove wax/sealant, check the bonnet face for residue build-up, when loaded with dried product they have an abrasive action that could be detrimental to the paint finish.

Maintenance/ Use- roughen up the Microfiber with your fingers after the completion of each section / panel. Check the bonnet’s face surface often, clean with a horsehair brush or change as necessary.
