FK1 Paint Decontamination?

Okay guys...anyone try this system?......reviews?....those orange dots on my white car are KILLING me.....lol

Thanks

Melissa

I have used it and was very happy with it myself. My contamination on the painted areas around the wheels(probably brake pads and any winter splash up with all that crap) was so incredibly bad I had to repeat step 2 twice or so. But when I was done with the final wash step the paint was ridiculously smooth.

And this stuff is safe around plastic trim....I also have vinyl stripes on my car, too......will that be an issue?....I should probably just call the company...lol

melissa, I've been passively following your ordeal and last I noticed you used the Sonus mild green clay; have you tried a more aggressive clay?

(I'm familiar with the dots you're talking about, and unless it's something I've yet to run across, a medium clay should take care of it, but will more than likely leave some marring that will need polished out).

EDIT: sorry, I just read your other thread regarding your experience with the Sonus. Didn't mean to give you redundant advice here.

No youre not supposed to let it touch plastic trim BUT I have accidentally(as Im sure many have) gotten it on mine, I just quick rinsed it and it did no damage. But I would think you would need to control it a bit more near the vinyl. Its simple to use just apply it with a foam applicator or a cut piece of grout sponge and just have your hose ready in case you get it on somewhere you wouldn't. And so you know youre not just sploshing it all over the place.

Hey gusbubba....I'm on the internet..and now I'm reading that even though you clay...the rust will come back...yadda yadda...because you're just sheering off the top.....AND I have NEVER polished a vehicle.....if I could get away with claying.....and then waxing...life would be complete...lol....but I am getting the feeling that is not the case

After reading that it isn't supposed to touch plastic.....I have a plastic chin spoiler...PLUS vinyl stripes on the side of the car...don't want to f**k with that....

On a side note...the sonus clay did work on some of the spots....and I didn't strip off the original coat of wax on the car.....at this point I am thinking perhaps I will just strip off the new wax....arm myself with EXTRA QD and just go to town.....

That *was* often the case IME. The decon. systems made for a much more permanent solution. But others do OK with just clay. It's a situational thing and you just never know.

The good news is that with lots of wax/sealant on the paint, subsequent rust blooms I've had were in the *LSP* instead of actually in the paint, so the clay worked fine.

Well, sooner or later you *will* have to polish for the paint to look its best. Just no way around that. Not *that* big a deal.

Which FK product are you supposed to keep off plastic? I've gotten their (I think this number is right  ) FK1119 on plastic with no problems. I mean, it might dry it out if you use the stuff all the time, but that's not a realistic concern IMO.

When I used the AutoInt systems I never had any problems on plastic...I just tried to keep the acidic "B" stuff off glass and silvery (chrome, aluminum, etc.) trim as best I could (which wasn't all that tough).

Note you don't want any of these products to *dry* on the surfaces, but that's not tough to avoid.

The first time I used ABC was on my then-new Audi S8. Zero margin for error, and zero problems. Next time was on the then-new minivan, and while that was a kinda big thing, again...zero problems. Never had any problems doing subsequent decon.s either, but I've always used ABC for full ones, just using FK1119 for a "super shampoo" now and then (never tired their acidic product, which I gather is a little milder than the "B").

I dunno...trying to muscle the Sonus green into doing something more than it's designed for might be a mistake. Note that the first step of any decon. system will strip off wax/etc.

Eh...if Mothers/ClayMagic Blue/etc. clay and an OTC paint cleaner like Meguiar's Deep Crystal Step #1 Cleaner don't do it, then I'd decontaminate. Well, *I* would just decontaminate, but that's me and I can be kinda extreme for a non-professional.
