First time with PC

I drive a 2001 Mustang GT Black.

I love the color but black is really difficult to keep clean, let alone all the swirls and scratches.

So I decided to fix the swirl and scratch to hopefully end up with a mirror finish. Ordered a PC7424 with some pads. Got some Menzerna Intensive Polish and Final Polish II.

So, with no previous experience with a DA, I read all the guides possible and watched all the videos about polishing with a machine.

First, lets see what the damage is

Driver side, rear quarter. Yep, lots of swirls when you shine a powerful light at it:(

Couple passes with the Porter Cable. You can see my reflection now:D

After going at it for 2 days, finally I can wash it to remove all the polish and wax residue. A little foam with DP Xtreme Foam + Foam Lance:p

Not only were the results outstanding but you take great pictures !!!!!!!

Thanks, the "After" picture where difficult to take because the camera is set on Auto.

The paint has become so smooth and black, the camera things it's pointing into pitch black night so the flash always activates :p

For now, I sealed the car with car with Meguiar's NXT 2.0, that was the only sealant I had in hand, did a pretty good job. I recently ordered some PB Natty Blue, from what I've read on the forum, it's great for black cars.

I have also found that my generation Mustang(99-2004) also known as the "Edge" Mustang has so many lines, cuts and shapes on all the panels making sometimes difficult to work with a 6.5inch pad. A smaller 4 inch pad would have been more appropriate for the smaller areas.

When I first used Menzerna IP, I found it difficult to work with. It dried up fast even though I spray some QD on the pad, thus creating lots of dust everywhere.

Later on, I finally manage to work with IP properly by using little IP, and working on smaller areas. Also, when IP start to get difficult to work with, it's most likely because the pad is saturate with IP and it requires cleaning.

Menzerna FP was so easy to work with, apply on until translucent and wipe off. It doesn't dry up and powder up.

I just ordered some Menzerna Final Touch Glaze to hide swirls on this car, if I ever need it and to use it on my new daily driver. It's a brand new 2008 so I have no intention of cutting the clear anytime soon, glaze should take care of that. Also ordered some Collinite 476 for my daily driver. From what I've read, it should protect my car during the whole winter(-30F + salt)

Looks great, I just had my first PC detail last weekend, ironically on a black '98 mustang too. What pad did you use and at what speed on the Porter Cable did you use to work in the polish?

Orange pad + Menzerna IP at speed 5

White pad + Menzerna FPII at speed 5

Looks good!

4" Pads are a must for the PC.

Do you use them as spot removal pads or do you do the entire car with them if its in the condition as the OP's mustang was? I was debating getting both a 4" orange/yellow for trouble areas and a 5.5" orange as my generic correction pad.

I was wondering the same as SiegeX, got my PC the other week and an also have Menzerna IP. I found the same thing about it drying up quickly.

Wondering if i just need the one 4" pad of each the orange/yellow.

After doing the whole car with a 6.5, I have found that it would be useful to have a 4 inch for those tiny spots.
