first time polishing

So I tried polishing my car for the first time this weekend. I used the m105/ orange + m205/white combo on the pc. It took me 8 hours, is this normal? I did two passes with m105 on everything accept the hood. It seemed to react well with only one pass. I did one pass with m205 on everything. A few times I got splatter everywhere. I got most of it off but there is still some on the back window. Any advice on how to get this off and how to prevent it from happening next time? I can get it off if i scrub really hard with QD but it takes a while and is pretty harsh. Also, when i used alcohol to clean the polish residue off it made streaks on the paint so i just used QD. Did it streak because of the heat?

Is m105 supposed to make alot of dust? I had dust everywhere so i just washed it before putting on bfwd. I only let bfwd sit for like 30 min, is that enough time? Will ocw be a good wax to layer on top?

Sry lots of questions.

Thanks,

Chris

Hmmm...where to start. I am not really familiar with the products your using but spatter is not good. Spatter is usually an indication your using too much product. Spatter should be removed ASAP so it does not harden like a brick. You can always rewash the car if all else fails. The key is experimentation, when polishing. See what works for you. Go to you tube and watch the pros power polish. If you watch the pros many of your questions will be answered. Remember with detail products LESS IS ALWAYS MORE. You dont need a lot of product, it just clogs the pads and defeats the purpose in the end.

I got the splatter by lifting the polisher up before it slowed down. I eventually got the technique down a little better. I think im gonna try to clay bar the window this weekend.

It's not unusual. I've spent a *LOT* longer than that before plus you're just getting the hang of this.

It *does* seem a little odd for so few passes (believe me, that's not even *close* to what's sometimes required) to take so long, and I bet you'll be able to do the same amount of work in less time with experience.

Don't lift the polisher up while the pad's moving and you shouldn't get splatter with a PC. If you still do, you're using *WAY* too much product and I do mean *WAY TOO MUCH*. Shouldn't even be close to a consideration.

Getting it off glass oughta be pretty simple: use a razorblade (I like plastic but you can use metal if you're careful).

. Also, when i used alcohol to clean the polish residue off it made streaks on the paint so i just used QD. Did it streak because of the heat?

Hard to say what caused it, the IPA was probably messing with all the oils that M105/M205 leave behind. I use Meguiar's #34 to buff off M105 and after I get the M205 off (with no such stuff) I wipe it down with IPA/PrepWash to get the oils out.

If you're having trouble getting the polish residue off, you might be using too much or working it too long.

It can, especially if you use a lot of product. Nothing wrong with washing before moving on to the LSP.

What should i do for the areas that i couldnt get into with the polisher? can i use the m105 by hand?

Yeah, just do those areas by hand.

Thanks for the help accumulator. When i do it by hand should i just use the m105 on the orange pad?

Also, the bfwd it attracting a rediculous amount of dust. is there any QD that can help with dust?

the alcohol is ur friend-make sure ur taking the time to properly tape off ur car before u start ur work and I always wash it before waxing with Chem Guys clear and wash, the polish leaves oils behind.

I usually find it easier to use a MF towel or a small wax applicator pad, but the orange foam pad *would* have a bit more bite to it. Do whatever seems to work OK for you, not like you're gonna screw up unless you *REALLY* overdo it or something.

It never does much for me, but people insist that FK425 (which I *do* love to use on sealants) does the anti-static thing.
