First time detailing a car - Black Audi S5

Hey Guys,

I bought an '09 Audi S5 in black that had been run through some automatic car washes which left the typical markings in my clear coat, as well as swirls and normal wear and tear. I decided that I wanted to fix up the paint and bring it back to life so after doing some reading online here are the results. What you do you guys think?

I started with a wash, then used Meguiars clay bar. Next I did multiple passes uses a cheep $40 orbital buffer with some Megs Ultimate Compound to remove the light scratches/swirls and the car wash damage. Once that was done I applied 2 layers of Megs NXT Tech Wax as a sealant and topped it with a layer of Megs Gold Class Carnuba Plus wax. I meant to do a second layer of the carnuba wax but ran out of time.

I wasn't able to get any of the deeper scratches, that I want to try and get out some other time when I can get a nice buffer and the proper pads and a more aggressive compound.

efarley-Welcome to Autopia! Fellow Audi-nut here :wavey

Looks like you did a very good job! Did you notice any real diff after topping the NXT with the Gold Class? IMO you didn't miss out on anything by not doing a second coat of the latter.

I *would* reconsider your choice of tire dressing...that looks very "shiny and oily" for my taste, but that's just me...

The difference between NXT only and NXT topped with Carnuba Plus is minimal, I noticed after topping that the metallic flake looked slightly deeper and the overall appearance appeared slightly more "wet", but you have to look closely and have a side by side to see any difference IMHO, a trained eye could probably see more of a difference. I'm hoping the tire wet dulls out a bit, it's a wax that's supposed to last 8-10 weeks (we'll see) is why I choose it, I can deal with a few days of oily if it looks good for 8 weeks, we'll see how it works out over time.

I used a 10 inch random orbital buffer made by Performance Tool, $40 from O'Riley. I'll probably pick up a PC this fall when I'm prepping the paint for winter.

efarley- Glad I didn't come across as too much of a [jerk] with my comment on the tire dressing :o

Heh heh, you won't *believe* how much better a "proper random orbital" will work on that Audi clear ;)

Looks really good!

Be glad you have the metallic black and not the jet black. Metallic is so much easier to live with when you have an Audi (or BMW).

If you are looking to move to more professional level products, I'd recommend Meguiars M100 as your compound and either 3D HD Polish or Optimum Hyper Polish as your polish. M100 has tremendous cut while not trashing and hazing the paint.

Good work! I see you are in Hillsboro.

I'm outside of Oregon City.
