First detail I've posted in awhile: 2003 Pontiac Bonneville

C. Charles Hahn

This is a 2003 Pontiac Bonneville SE1. It belongs to my boss, who scraped it against a parked car when pulling into a space. Resultantly, she recieved a nasty scrape in the paint and on the headlight. I buffed everything out with DACP touched up the couple remaining paint chips, went over the whole car with DACP, and topped with NXT and S100. The results speak for themselves:

And that, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, is one transformed car! :xyxthumbs

if I missed any details (ha!) or anything, just ask! :wavey

Wow!

Looks great.

I did a similar job before on a black Maxima...The lady's son side swiped her garage door. Both her and her son were happy to see I got the car back to about 85-90% :D . I'm sure your customer was just as pleased...Beats a repaint!

exactly true... she got a quote from a body shop at $500 to replace the nose cone, paint it, and put on a new headlight. I did the job for $100 (only because she's my boss, so I figured I'd give a discount)

but she walked in the shop last night to pick it up and asked who's car I was working on :D

Unfortunately, the temps in my garage were below 50-degrees ferenheit; so the paint took FOREVER to cure.

When you used the touch up paint, did you have to apply any primer or anything underneath the paint? Whenever I use the touchup paint on my car, it always comes off after a couple months. Also, did you use the DACP over the newly touched-up area?

Nope, I didn't do anything under the paint except clean the bare plastic and immediately surrounding areas with isopropyl alcohol, heating it a little bit with a hair dryer and applying the color coat. After it sat for about 6 hours I came back and put a second coat on, let everything dry for around 12 hours. After that I came back and DACPed over everything to smooth/blend the edges, and sealed it with the NXT. Sure, I could've put on a clearcoat, wetsanded, compounded, etc. but I figured there wasn't a point, with as minor of dammage was still present after buffing. Plus I already know I'll have this car back in the spring so I might do some more to it then if things don't stay as well covered as they are now.

I've done this touch-up procedure on my personal vehicles several times before with no negative results. :nixweiss

Thanks for the positive comments guys, I'm particularly happy with how this one came out. I have done similar repairs in the past, but the overall change was much more drastic with this one. Good to see some familiar faces are still around, too! :xyxthumbs

Also I should mention since I've already gotten a PM about it, that the headlight was done just with DACP and a meguiar's yellow foam polishing pad on the PC -- just applied the polish, held the polisher over the scrape at speed 6, and let the machine work its magic. Of course, checking periodically to ensure there was still usable/wet polish under the pad.

Are you working on a raise? You deserve one.

:lol nope, I actually just got a raise of $2.25/hr. about a month ago... that's the only one I'll be getting for awhile.... unless of course I get a better job altogether (which her husband has been talking to me about stealing me from his wife to come work for him elsewhere) :up
