Film inside windshield....

What is with this stuff inside my windshield? About a week or so after cleaning the inside of my windshield, I get a greasy film that distorts view. I have used Vinylex to condition my dash but that was 6 months ago. The dash still has a sheen to it which I don't like. As a matter of fact, I don't like the Vinylex becasue it leaves a shinny complexion afterwards. First off, does anyone know how I can get rid of that film on the windshield? Also, what product(s) would you recommend for conditioning vinyel that would leave a matte finish? Thank you all for your suggestions! Regards, Cliff *.
 
The film is from the vinyl and other plastics releasing gases. Probably the vinylex too but I am not sure.



Just clean the windshiel is all...I use stoners IG on a MF then buff with a surgical green towel! But any method will work.
 
Wow, I didn't know that plastics release gases. This is kind of funny... you mention Stoner's IG. I have a can of that and have used it but don't like it. It just seems to smear what is already on the glass. I am probably the only person that doesn't like it because I hear great things about it. I just don't get it. :nixweiss -Cliff
 
nah it smears around a bit..but then when you grab the dry towel to buff it comes out cleannnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!! Check out the carport site under details details details...somewhere in there David talks about these gases etc...those gases are the new car smell BTW.
 
Hehe - I got a severe case of this in my new car - after fully detailing it up and down, a week later, went into the garage, and the windshield was FILTHY!



Couldn't believe my eyes - then I read about the gases the vinyl emits and it made sense.



I used Eagle One 20/20 - found it locally (since I had already placed my CMA order for the month) - cheap, plentiful, and very good. Cut through the hazing right away, and after a minute of buffing - the windshield was so clear, it was almost as if it wasn't even there.
 
I also use E1 20/20 with great success, so if you don't like Stoner's IG try E1.

Make sure you don't spray it directly on windshield, it will be all over your dash. Final buff with dry MF makes the glass truly invisible.
 
What you are seeing is called "plasticizing." The interior materials release gases and this can go on for some time.



Invisible glass did not cut the job. Use some 20/20 or a mixture of vinegar/water/IPA.
 
What can I use on the plastics and vynals in my car? I currently use Vinynlex but it's to shinny for me. I need something with a non greasy matte finish. Prefrabably something I can buy at Pep Boys ect. Thanks!
 
The product is about 33% resin and the rest is water.



Experiment, cut it another 25% with water, apply and let set for 30 seconds, then wipe with a dry clean towel.



This should give you the low gloss you want, but still leave a small amount of the resin on the surface.



This will also reduce the fogging of the glass.



Applying a product that is that resin rich on the dash and not wiping down will only add to the fogging.



PDMS do evaporate and they end up on your glass.



ADD ON--Check the MSDS or components on the label. if contains glycerin, and many do contain some, the glycerin may also add to the "fogging" as it evaporates.

I like SIG and Sprayway glass cleaners but getting the interior glass has more to do with technique imo than about the cleaner.



First I spray the cleaner on to the towel then spread it around the section that I'm working on. You can check your work in direct sun but don't start cleaning in direct sun because it will evaporate the cleaner too quickly. Let the cleaner sit on the glass for 30 seconds or so to allow the chemicals some dwell time to break down the film. Next step is to use a clean MF cloth (preferably a towel dedicated to this purpose) and wipe the window pretty aggressively like you are trying to wipe honey off of a counter. As you wipe keep turning to clean sections of the towel. The last step is to buff the glass with a clean MF. Buffing requires that you rub the glass pretty vigorously with a wadded up towel. Works good for me. :xyxthumbs
 
Ive been using Vinylex for the last 2 years and havent noticed any fogging on the windshield..but I do clean inside often so maybe Im not giving it time to fog up..:p
 
a try. I feel it has the least "fogging" of anything I have tried. Leaves a nice low-gloss finish on vinyl and can be used on leather seats also. A little goes a long way. Kind of pricey, though. But worth it, IMO.
