I'm currently detailing my engine compartment to get my car ready for a judged car show. The car has matte black paint on the underside on the hood and I'm wondering what's the best thing to apply to this area to make it look good for the car show.



Wax doesnt' work as it gets white and cloudy on this paint. I've tried using a mixture that's half ArmorAll and half water, but it still gets streaky and collects lots of dust.

What is this white and cloudy look you describe? Haven't heard of that and would love some info on it. Is it due to the wax melting and hardening over and over?

Don't use any armorAll on a show car (or any car IMHO) unless it is the same color as milk. There is a thread a few down about this same subject but in short it is not safe IOO.

Try a "synthetic polymer sealant," which is <strong class='bbc'>much[/b] nicer than it sounds. Forum favorites are Klasse and Zaino. These are known to last well over 6 months on a show car. In the less durable category is Blackfire, available from The sponsor of our forum.
 
I would...hmmm...wash and clean it really well and probably use QD like BW said. Tim at tacscar.com sells a spray wax in a can, that might work.



What's that engine cleaner stuff that Meguiars sells that you can spray on hoses and paint and plastic anywhere in the engine compartment that will clean it? Anyone use that stuff? cause that might work too.



but if all else fails just keep it clean, but perhaps if you're looking to dress it up try 303 or Black Magic Semi gloss (the PDMS line of water based non silicone line of dressings)
 
Thanks for all the help. I'm going to experiment on a small, inconspicuous area and first try one of the polymer waxes. If that doesn't work out, I'll try a QD. I've got plenty of Meguiar's #34.
