eggcrate foam

The Enforcer

I purchased a handgun yesterday, and had an idea when I opened the case up! The eggcrate foam used in these cases would be perfect for applying LSP, dressings, coatings...etc. Super soft, conforms to curves, would be easy to handle bc of the eggcrate texture. Has anyone else been crazy enough to think of this yet? I'm going to test and make sure it doesn't marr the finish to soft black paint, but it feels super soft and at least 100 ppi compared to some of my other pads with ppi ratings. You can buy the stuff super cheap in big sheets on Uline and probably many other packaging places, and cut to fit whatever size you need. Thought, comments, am I crazy?

$ saved is a $ made! I try to be resourceful when I can...I may or may not have made my own wheels woolies out of toilet bowl brushes/scrap microfiber towels...

I use cut out pieces of grout sponges all the time for trim dressings or tire dressings, and then just toss them I'm the garbage when I'm done. Mainly because I'm lazy and don't want to clean applicators.

On paint? I would just use an applicator designed for such. I don't want to go looking for problems on a scratch sensitive surface.

The Enforcer- I just leave that stuff in the boxes it came in and use "flat" foam for my detailing.  Be sure to check for any oil/etc. if you do use yours on a vehicle.

I don't think that the gun eggcrate has as many pores per square inch as normal applicators

that have the same look to them.  It is the pores that help with the products.

Now, I do think that these would work, especially for tire dressing, but how would they

hold up, and would its durability affect the value of the purchase?

Edge pads use to have a waffle style similar to the egg crate foam. I didn't really care for them, but, I don't like LC CCS pads either. Give me flat foam!

I always liked the variable contact pads, as I felt it allowed me to work curves and around trim better.

ETA: I guess that you could cut a slit in the side of this and make a mitt, for applying protectant to

interiors and such.  If it holds up, it could be a good find.  Of course, I don't know how expensive in bulk it is.

I just applied Optiseal to a black 5th Gen Camaro and it worked great. The eggcrate texture/pattern actually helps you hold onto the material a lot easier than a regular applicator pad. No marring and product applied very easy and even. Now if someone wasnts to test this on jet black BMW...

Here in my side of town we have a "foam factory", and they sell a few grades of eggcrate foam. Also square-crate, sharp-crate, memory foam, mattress foam, some of the softest stuff imaginable. I approached them about making foam polishing pads and they were beyond non-interested :/

For applicators I'm sure it would be fine as long as the foam is soft and does not drag. Its not like the generic yellow foam appilcators are anything special (or really that soft). I try to use at least red foam lcc pads for delicate surfaces. This makes me wanna take ine down there and find something similar...
