Effect Of Cold Weather On Car Care Products?

Once I buy all of the wonderful car care products that have been recommended to me by DC posters, will I have to worry about them being rendered ineffective by the coming cold weather?

I plan to keep the products in my unheated garage in Maryland. It generally gets as cold as 20 degrees and sometimes as cold as 0 degrees on a couple of nights.

How do you guys store your car care products over winter?

Thanks,
Charles

Store them somewhere inside.

Freezing may not negatively impact some products, but it can others. Better safe than sorry.

I bring mine in for the winter and store them in the basement (heated). I use my products through the winter so it is kind of a bummer to reach for a qd that is frozen solid :D...tends to scratch the paint when trying to apply it.

If you have the room in your house it is best to be safe like Rob said.

Do NOT leave them outside. The freeze and thaw of the products will make them, or could very easily make them, garbage. I bring in all of my products and store them in the baement during the winter months.

Now that you are storing them in the house, you need a way to keep them together and carry them back and forth to your work area.
Sterilite makes a "Tote Tray' that they call an Ultra Caddy. You can see them at this link.

I have several of the #1584 that I purchased at Wal*Mart in their housewares section. Not expensive, seem to be durable, and big enough to hold 32 oz. bottles of products.

That's a great idea Charles. I have to have my wife pick one of those up for me on her next shopping trip (which will undoubtedly be very soon)! :ranton

Hehehe .. great minds think a like.. I keep my products in one of these:

The ones I purchased were from Target, for around $35 each, they were the largest I could find (a little larger then the large one shown on their web page), two wide very deep drawers for products, two wide half height drawers for applicators, paste waxes and other small items. I have another one, same size, that I use for MF's and pads.

Very good to have around, the only draw back is that the wheels are fairly small and do not like uneven floors. Apart from that I'm very happy with them.

Do NOT store your products outside in an unheated garage. If it gets too cold and they freeze it will render some of them useless, usually your waxes and polishes.

Better have her get two.:)
One of mine is for cleaning supplies, 32 oz. bottles of S&W, window cleaner, APC+ 12:1 solution, Woolite 6:1 solution, Final Detail, Final Inspection, UGE. The other has several, mostly 3 oz. containers of various polishes, waxes, and sealants.
Works great. Just grab one from the basement and head for the garage.

I bought 3 Sterilite containers from Wal-Mart. They all go in the basement under the stairs where they're immediately accessible when the weather breaks.

One is tall enough to hold anything I have with a trigger sprayer & big enough to hold all the products & pads.

The other two are shallow type containers, similar to what you'd slid under your bed but half the size. One holds all the MF & the other holds the pads.

Any products that are in aerosol containers (like Stoner's) will be worthless in the spring. Some products will freeze & separate and you can shake them till the cows come home but they'll never be the same. If the products that freeze have trigger sprayers, it'll ruin the trigger sprayer, too.

You've made the investment in top quality products, bring them inside before you wish that you had.
