Edge vs. SIP

I heard that edge pads and SIP dont get along? Can anyone tell me in what way? Does it ruin the pads?

Reason i ask is because i just recently moved to the edge system and im lovin it but SIP works so well im dieing to use it again i just dont want to ruin any pads

Any help would be great thanks!

Also is it only the SIP or the whole new Menzerna line?

Hopefully Rydawg and the others that have tried the SIP with the Edge foam will chime in here, elitemobile...

I do remember Rydawg and someone else saying that the SIP on Edge foam will sometimes make a squealing noise and a burning smell(!).

Rydawg says that the LC orange foam pad is a very good choice for SIP. I've had decent results with green LC foam, white LC foam, as well as green and blue edge wool. When I had trouble getting SIP working right the first time I tried it, I mixed it with a bit of 106ff. It really made it easier to work with, but it did decrease it's cutting power. I was mixing it 50/50. You could try mixing it (maybe stronger for better cutting) and giving it a shot?

I tried it last Friday and had the same problems. I was using Edge Green then Blue with SIP. Not a pleasant experience. It still works but it's hard to control and gums up a lot. 106FF worked fine. Those are the only 2 Menzerna products I have at the moment.

Not going to ruin pads but Edge pads do make using Menzerna polishes more difficult and messy. I didn't get the best results either.

I used the Blue Edge pad with SIP and I didn't run into any issues with guming up or burning.

However, I am going to be getting into the Edge wool, I doubt it, but any issues with the Menz and the Edge Wool?

What is it with Edge pads that makes this happen? I just don't get it.

I have the same question since we and all our competitiors buy and use the same exact foams in our pads.

That why i laugh when people bash your pads becuase of the foam used, its the same freakin foam.

From what I understand Aaron (Ive been trying to get into contact with you) is that the foam is the same yes.. but the process the foam goes through is quite different. LC has a closed cell structure.

Your pads go through a different process and come out as "durafoam".

The closed cell format of LC's foam keeps much more of the product on the surface of the foam pad itself. With your (Edge) foam, the product tends to "soak" up most of the product and not leave much on the surface of the pad.

I tried your green and blue and orange Edge foam pads, and it was a disaster using those with SIP. It was squeeling all over the place, it smelled like a "burning" smell, etc....

Now I have not had this problem with 106ff and blue edge, I just need to use 3 times more product to prime the pad. On the LC pads, I prime with 4 dots of product, and use 2 dots every application thereafter.

Now Im not bashing your foam Aaron, you make a great product! Unfortunately it does not work well with the polishes I use most. However I did custom order some wool pads from you and I hope to clarify this issue because your system is really an outstanding system.

As far as the foam processing is concerned, this is just what Ive gathered from making many phone calls and talking to different people as far as foam is concerned.

So yes, they are the same foam, but they are very very different as well.

they should also come out with a velcro backing plate that clicks to there adapter so we can use both...

I used SIP with yellow wool today exceeded my expectation 10 fold remove some decent scratches and swirls. It did leave some holagraming but nohing out of the ordianry. Followed up with 106ff on a white edge pad and the paint was near flawless really impressed with menzernas new lineup...and its a time saver too!

Hey elite thats good to hear as my wool pads will be here Wednesday. What RPMS were you running with the yellow wool and how many passes did it take for the polish to break down?? I think Im working it too long.

Thanks elite,

Jim

Yeah, I did a truck yesterday and think I was working the compound too long, I was using OC though.

Caused some hardcore micromarring that was a pain to get out.

Yea I would just like to know what the "average" number of passes it takes to break down the SIP with a wool pad at say around 1600-1800 RPM's.

I really do think I'm working it too long!

Jim

i know for a fact i was using it around 1500rpms and im not positive on the number of passes but i can tell you it is ALOT less than other compounds/polishs ive used. IMO it broke down really fast and easy. Im going to experiment with the green wool when i get a chance see if i cant get it to finish down hologram free if not i might have to put in an order for some blue..

Next time i have a go with SIP ill count my passes and report back

KLER...did you get the 8in or 6in wool? I have used both and the 6in is a joy especially in the tight spots. For compounding and heavy polishing ill never look back to foam again

yea, I ordered the 6" wool pads. I am really really looking forward to getting them in! I called AG, they said they would be here on Wednesday!

And not having to tape like a crazy man has its advantages too!

Im really excited about getting them in, I only have the blue and green on order, maybe I should have ordered a yellow.....

Oh well, next order!
