I called Powerhouse and had them send a replacement backing plate directly to DedicationToDetail so they could do the Edge adapter conversion for me. This is honestly one of those modifications that I probably would have paid any price for, but they are only charging $37 for the Edge conversion on the FLEX backing plates. You just send them the backing plate and they convert it and send it back. What could be slicker???
Just to summarize my experience with the FLEX polisher to explain why I am excited about this, my backing plate is sort of messed up. I don't know if it is a design flaw or user error, but the edge of the backing plate was grinding against the housing of the gear and running a beautiful groove into the backing plate. So I called Powerhouse Distributing, who is the US supplier for the FLEX tools, and they handled the warranty claim. To save a buck on shipping, I had them send the replacement directly to The Edge so they could do the conversion.
Now it won't be long until I can get back to making more money by saving more time with the awesome FLEX DA polisher.
The reason I think the Edge adapter is going to solve my problems is because all the pressure is going to be centered in the gear. The backing plate itself won't actually have any pressure applied to it since the pad connects to the adapter that is screwed into the center of the machine. This is going to allow me to use my much wider variety of Edge pads compared to what I have in the velcro variety as well as just being an awesome choice of pad.
I know a few of you have been waiting for the FLEX Edge adapter too, so I'm here to tell you that if you can do without your backing plate for a couple weeks, the solution is here.
Your other options is to pay the $45 for a new backing plate already converted. I'm looking forward to being able to compare my velcro pads on the FLEX with the Edge pads, so having both is going to work out well. My chewed up backing plate is still functional even though it has that channel cut into it, so it will be fun to write up the reviews in the near future!
YAY EDGE!!
