Ebay users be careful

I received a fake email from "eBay Inc" today asking me to re-update my account information, and I need to include a credit card # in order to keep my account active. When I tried to forward the email message to Ebay, the text got automatically deleted, as if the scammer is trying to cover their a$$. So I saved the entire web page and sent that as an attachment to Ebay. They responded and said that it was indeed a fake email. Here's what the email said...



Dear eBay member,

We regret to inform you that your eBay account could be suspended if you don't re-update your account information. To resolve this problem please visit the link below and re-enter your account information.



(I'll leave the link out)



If your problems could not be resolved your account will be suspended for a period of 24 hours, after this period your account will be terminated.

For the User Agreement, Section 9, we may immediately issue a warning, temporarily suspend, indefinitely suspend, or terminate your membership and refuse to provide our services to you if we believe that your actions may cause financial loss or legal liability for you, our users, or us.

We may also take these actions if we are unable to verify or authenticate any information you provide to us.



Due to the suspension of this account, please be advised you are prohibited from using eBay in any way. This includes the registering of a new account. Please note that this suspension does not relieve you of your agreed-upon obligation to pay any fees you may owe to eBay.

I personally use Paypal or money order for my ebay purchases so these pitiful attempts to fraud people are really just a waste of time.



They were pretty clever though, as a lot of the crap they wrote matches to eBay's authentic stuff.
 
Yeah it was a clever email attempt. I use Paypal too, but when you click on the link (actually the link is fake, it's just underlined text and the ENTIRE email is a giant button that takes you to a completely different site when you click on it) it asks you to sign in. I did that, and then it asks for a credit card number and everything, so I closed that and reported it to Ebay. I then promptly changed my password.
 
Whenever you get those, don't even go to the link. If you have auto-fill in passwords set, it will nab them even if you don't type them in. My rule is that I never link out of an e-mail, I always type the site in to make sure I don't end up on a spoof site. I get them from 'banks' all the time. My favorite ones are the ones with the poor grammar, misspellings, etc. :laugh:
 
Yeah, I get those all the time. I also get fake ones claiming to be from Paypal too.



I send all suspicious Paypal emails to [email protected] (as directed from the paypal site)



I'm sure Ebay has a place to send fake emails to as well, I just don't know of it.
 
Ebay does. [email protected]. I get spoof e-mails a few times a month mostly from "banks" but I have gotton a few Ebay and PayPal ones as well. Some are obvious with misspelling bad grammar etc. but I did get a couple that looked real convincing.



As kompressornscnever said never link out of an e-mail, ALWAYS type the site address in the address bar to make sure you don't end up on a spoof site.
 
If an E-mail is really from Pay pal, it will have your first and last name on the e mail.



Maybe E bay has something similar...
 
Does this mean that Nigel from Ethiopia IS NOT putting $10,000,000 on my account for safekeeping? and I don't get 10%?.........I can't believe these kind are still coming out

Those are the ones from Nigeria. I used to get them at my work e-mail. My coworkers and I would respond to let them know we were eagerly "interested" and they would answer back. We would then proceed to have an e-mail correspondance where we would then turn then tables on them asking them to establish bank accounts and forward us their account numbers, etc... We would ask for tons of information like their mother's maiden name, their home address, phone number, etc... on and on and on and on.



They got terribly confused. We said if they needed our help they would have to do it. Finally, we sent them one last e-mail making fun of them and insulting them in the worst way!



It was a ton of fun during the stressful work day to take a break and share a good laugh with the guys in the office. We would shout out to everyone that we got a response and then we would all gather together and think of stuff to type back.



Sad thing is, there are so many stupid people that do provide them with personal information.
 
So if you do accept one of the Nigerian's offers where does the money come from they are sending ? Are you laundering dirty money or what the heck is it about really ?

There is no money. It's all about getting access to your bank account. They tell you it's so they can deposit money in your account (why they need all the information), but instead, they clean it out. There was a good story on 60 minutes a few weeks ago about a guy that was scamming them and getting them to jump through all these hoops just to mess with them.

Still a lot of stupid people in the world...and everyone of them is ahead of me in line when I am in a hurry. ;)

Oh, you mean the lady at the grocery store that waits until the clerk gives her the total before she even takes her checkbook out of her purse? I am so in love with the U-Scan-I just think they should give you an extra 5% off for doing the work yourself.
 
The good thing is that by posting this nonsense here we KNOW that NO ONE at autopia will fall for this stuff........ we can always ask here to see if it smells tooooooooooooooooooo bad,,,,,,
 
i recieved one of these emails too. and the thing is it looks so real!!! i am sure there are a lot of people who have fallen for this one. but most legit sites always tell ya that they wont ask for any of that info, at least not by email.. :2thumbs:
