dsms detail - 3 days with an Aston Martin DB9...

A few quick questions...

- Many detailers tape off a section of the car to show before & afters of the compounding/polishing phase.

Has anyone taped off a section AFTER compounding/polishing to show before & after results of the "jeweling" phase? I would love to see a side-by-side picture after "jeweling" to see how much of a difference this step makes.

- On extensive, multi-day details, is there a reason detailers do not remove the wheels/tires? The two times a year I "detail" my daily drivers, I find it makes for a MUCH better job if the wheels are removed.

To be honest a lot of people mistake jeweling for being this end all gloss enhancing method, when in fact its not. Certain paints really benefit from the constant low speed leveling and others its hard to tell much of a difference at all... that is teh difference between regularly rotary finishing and the longer jeweling process if you used the same pad and polish.

Pictures will hardly show a drastic difference, especially on a cloudy day. Its one of those things that offers a small benefit to the finish, icing on the cake if you will.

Couple reasons detailers dont remove wheels, first being time constraints, second being not having the PROPER tools to safely remove a wheel, without scratching the lug area. And in the case of this Aston, I was able to clean the entire wheel in and out using a good wheel cleaner (p21s) and various brushes. I later followed up with polishing and sealing etc. The 5 spoke design isnt too bad to work with, some very intricate wheels I can see removal being a huge help.

Also torquing the wheels back to the proper spec is an issue for many. Unless you have the exact torque specs (as some people here have access to that information) I would be super careful.

How much do you charge for a detail like that?

Please dont take offense to this but your very FIRST post on here has nothing to do with detailing, the process of detailing. Not even a comment to say my work is good or bad....

You simply ask how much?...

That number is between the owner of the Aston Martin and myself.

:doh

Great attention to the detail. The Aston Martin DB9 is IMO the best looking supercar. It has truly timeless lines.

Top notch work Dave! Great write up too!

Iteresting placement of the hand brake and power seat controls. You don't see that every day! ;)

very nice detail. As you stated long details are great . . . . . you don't feel rushed and you get to go all out.

Keep up the good work. Also, nice work area! Hows business?

Wow! Incredible work! What I like is that you really payed extreme attention to detail and treated that wonderful automobile like it was your own child! That's what I like to see from a detailer. Taking their time and going slow to get all the little imperfections out instead of glazing it over quickly with a rotary like it's just another piece of metal. Bravo sir.

I'm sorry! Please don't take me the wrong way. I'm a huge fan of Aston Martins and nice cars in general. It's just that I'm trying to start a detailing business of my own and was just curious to see what some crazy awesome work like that on an epic automobile like that would go for. (not a question)

Btw, what a result!! B-e-a-utiful!:bow Did you find any 007 gadgets? (joking) :D

PS. I agree with the others that it's so much fun when you can just take your time with a sweet car. It's a true passion of mine, and I think of most of the members here, to take a car that could use some tlc and make it absolutely beautiful.

awesome work - the attention to detail with no inch missed or skipped over. Everything looks perfect - the wheels, tires, brakes, paint, trim, etc. stunning results and i agree with you - that's a pretty awesome plate

Phenomenal work! It's nice to see how real detailing is done and how much attention to detail you clearly do in here. Way to go!
