Drive Drunk in NO CA...Get Turned In!

Just One More Coat
On the local news was a story about this guy & his site. He has taken it upon himself to cruise the streets here in the Petaluma to Santa Rosa areas where there are higher numbers of bars looking for people that he SUSPECTS are drunk & driving....Uses a video to capture there driving habits, and then turns them in on 911.

Here is the kicker....he cruises an area that I play in sometimes:eek:

However its just not bars in this area, is a high mix of bars and restaurants with a very high mix of singles to families out for the evening.

All of his activities are after dark, so that he cannot be detected. No concern with me I don't play at night like that any longer, but I have quite a few friends that do in that area...

The other crappy part is that his hit rate is only 30% so 70% of the time he is wrong....I wonder how long its going to take law enforcement to get tried of that? Not to mention that tax payers money that is being wasted.

Don't get me wrong I don't condone driving under the influence, but this is clearly the wrong way to go about correcting the problem.

What are your thoughts?

Here is a link to his site.

I have called the police a couple of times when I have been beside people driving and noticed they were drinking beer out of the can while driving. It's illegal here to have an open container in the car, and it doesn't bother me one bit to call the state troopers when I see it. No excuse for driving and drinking.

Thanks I was wondering if anyone was going to reply to this thread...it can be a touch subject...I am with you on drinking while driving for that matter....I to have called the local CHP if I see someone swriving or driving recklessly on the freeway...but I don't seek them out

I think I can safely say that most all here on this BB have driven when we where questionable.. I have..However what gives this guy the permission to stock me at a bar and then follow me while using a video cam and turn me in...vigilante at the very least.

He also hurting the bar owners at the same time...who wants to have a few drinks at a place that you might suspect is being watched? not me!

I stand by my statement of no excuse for driving and drinking. If you're going to drink, get someone else to drive you, take a cab, or something. I've seen too many times where "drunk" drivers have ruined other people's lives. Lots of times, they are able to walk away.

I know it might sound "holier than thou" but most people take driving for granted and don't give it their full attention. I got no respect for people who drink and drive.

It could be a good solution. Here is a similar situation I can compare it to. People drive too fast up and down a street near my house. It is sort of a shortcut between two busy streets and people like to see how much time they can save I guess. The neighborhood got together and made the plan that for as long as it took they would call dispatch everytime somone obviously was going faster than 35 mph. The street is fairly long and that had to create a couple hundred calls a day into dispatch. Now it is the one of the best partrolled streets in my town. There is always a cop hiding behind something willing to bust speeders. It is a well known speed trap area and it slowed down the traffic enormously.

So my point is that maybe if there were more civilians looking out for our safety, then it would encourage law enforcement to focus in particular areas a little more. I've seen it work on a number of occasions in different situations, so I think this guy has the right idea.
