Does your grid guard clean the mitt well?

Hi all,

I wash the car with Schmitt & Wool mitt (from Griot's Garage)... I notice no matter how much I rub them against grid guard in rinse bucket, there's still these small particles on them. There's even more if you look even closer inside the mitt... Do you worry about these particles at all? How do I get them out fast & effectively when I'm in the middle of washing the car?

Thank you in advance for any feedbacks!

Are you use it with ONR ??? Cause then it's going to be more dirty then doing a conventional wash

I use it with ONR. I use the schmitt with onr because of that. I don't trust a wool mitt or whatever to not trap dirt in even with the GG so I use the schmitt and works great for me.

Yea I usually just stock up on wash mitts. They are about $4-$6 a peice. When it get contaminated I just throw it away. A $4 mitt is just not worth 2 hours of my time trying to get all the marring out that it caused. everytime the supply truck stops in I buy another 5 mitts or so. Just easier that way

I think my MF wash mit cleans up OK against my girt guard.

When I dump all the wash water into the sink, I see a lot of dirt particles under the grit guard, but my wash mit is pretty clean.

Thank you all for your input. I really appreciate it. A bit more info:

1) The Schmitt & Wool Mitt are both pretty new (only used them twice)

2) I did try to spray them down using firehose but can still see these black/brown 'dots'... maybe from tree leaves or something. They won't scratch the paint, right?

I have them in my wash buckets, and I may be wrong, but I dont really see any great advantage. As soon as I stir up the water by removing and soaking the mitt, all of the debris from below the Grit Guard circulates throughout the bucket.

I see a plus when leaving the mitt in the bucket, then mitt doesnt sit directly on the dirt. But beyond that, no distinct advantage.

+1 I just don't see the point. I rinse my mitt out very well in my rinse bucket after each panel, wring it out well into the rinse bucket, and inspect the mitt before putting it back into the wash bucket (where it tends to float anyways). Typically when I finish my QEW wash, there is hardly any dirt at all in my wash bucket.

Can someone also explain the 'sponge' process? Is it better than the Mitt and doesn't scratch?

Thanks.

It is really a matter of opinion, but here is mine. The GS from Lowes is ultra soft. A lot of people also like the one from Home Depot. I have used both and inspected my car very closely with the Halogens (as I always do after every wash) and I have never had any new swirl marks from either GS and the clearcoat on my Lexus is as soft as it gets. The advantage of using a GS and why they are less likely to cause swirl marks is that they rinse out very well, much better than wool or a MF mitten, which means you are less likely to be dragging dirt across your paint. Also, the pores (which are larger in the Lowes GS) absorb a lot of the dirt particles, so they don't remain on the surface marring your paint. The one from Lowes also spreads suds a lot better than the one from HD. Always use a two bucket system regardless of your wash media. Technique is very important. I do half of a panel at a time turning the sponge over once, then rinse the sponge in the rinse bucket then put it back in the shampoo bucket and continue with the rest of the panel. I also dedicate a separate GS to the lower panels since that is where your wash media will take the hardest hit. I suggest the one from Lowes because it is softer, has larger pores, and spreads the suds better. Give it a try, they are less than $2, so if you don't like it, you won't have much to loose. You will find them in the section with the cleaning supplies (mops, brooms, etc). These are the ones by PRO LINE. Don't get the one from the tiles section, as those are completely different and not as soft. After trying the Lowes GS, I will never again go back to wool or mf mittens. I also use it for my ONR washes and it works just as great. Here is a link Professional Tile & Grout Sponge
