Does this stuff scratch paint?

When waxing, if you accidentally go over black trim, your applicator turns a little bit black. Does the black stuff on your applicator harm your paint?

I don't think that it would scratch provided that the surface was clean to begin with. I would compare it to single stage paint. When you rub single stage paint, you will get some "rub off" on the pad/mf, but it doesn't cause the rest of the paint to scratch.

Well, it is always best to have a clean applicator just to be safe, although I've never noticed any damage from trim gunk, it makes it hard to tell if you've picked up any "real" dirt somewhere else if you've got a black applicator. Probably the only way to get a definitive answer would be to wait for someone like David Fermani to answer.

Cleaner the applicator pad the better. Any transer (be it dirt or paint) isn't good to be rubbing against your paint. This black trim... is it textured? Depending on the product used, it could white it out so you might want to avoid it all together.

The applicator pad was brand new. I am positive it wasn't dirt, it was rub off from the black rubber around the sunroof and the "pebble textured" black trim. I try to avoid it the best I can, but unless I tape it off, I end up accidentally rubbing on it. I always use Mother's Back to Black on black trim before I wax to prevent staining.
