Does clay remove sealant?

Hey guys--

Fairly new to this detailing thing, but I've already picked up a ton of great tips. However, there's one question I haven't been able to find the answer to.

I know that clay will remove carnauba. Does it remove acrylic sealants, i.e. Klasse SG or Blackfire? Just need to know if I need to re-seal after using clay.

Thanks.

Clay will take off everything basically. You only need to clay when you are starting over from scratch (ooh, bad word for detailers to use)....clay will take off SG and AIO, thus you would have to start over with AIO after claying, thus if you AIO/SG twice a year, then you could use clay before each application.....just some facts learned here....don't know how easy it would be to find old threads specifically on this topic, but it certainly has come up in related threads using clay, Klasse, etc.....good luck.

Yup. That about says it all. If you are going to be claying your car then you probably want to start with a Dawn wash (search if you don't know what that is) anyway. That should take care of all the wax and probably most of the sealant. The clay will help out with the rest of the sealant. Think about it this way: if the clay is going to be removing the contamination under the sealant, then it must be removing the sealant too, right? ;) Welcome to Autopia! :wavey

Thanks guys. :) Makes sense. I was hoping this might provide a shortcut in case I ever wanted to add extra coats of a sealant (SG or BF) that I had previously topped with a carnauba. Guess not though.

Looking forward to many positive contributions and learning experiences here on Autopia! Thanks for the welcome.

If you wish to remove the sealant better 3M Adhesive, tar and wax remover will do that. Much easier and efficient to use a clay bar if waxes or sealants are removed.

Yes, I wouldn't rely on claying as a proper stripping procedure. It just removes wax/sealant as a byproduct of its action. Just remember that its action is mechanical, not chemical or solvent-based.
