Do You Think Gas.....

I remember the 60's crisis (I'm 51) however I believe that the oil companies need to be regulated at some level....tighter control over what profits they can make....this last time they reported record high profits was a slap in the consumers face

I would agree with that. They are making billions in profit yet the cost of the gas just keeps getting higher and higher. Bottom Line is there rippin us off. I was watching the news last night and they showed prices of gas per gallon from around the world and I think it was China paying 0.12 per gallon for there gas. All of the European Decent countries along with most of our allies are paying the most.

It also doesn't help that we have not built a new Refinery in over 20 years we also have way to many variance grades of gas. Last time i checked there were like 60 different grades. If the Federal government would step in and regulate that every state uses the same gas blend the price could drop in half over night.

We must of saw the same thing Richard I saw that the middle east is paying
.32 cent a gallon....that was like 1960 for us here..I agree its really time that something is done!

Not that I like paying alot for gas but many of you read uncredible news sources with unobjective reporting (ahem . .Rolling Stone, etc.). While our national average this week was about $2.88 per gallon Europe was about $7.11! Japan is paying over $4.50 per gallon; BTW, China is not $0.12 - they are just about where we are in terms of price - how can a company pay ~$75 for a barrel of crude, have to fractionate the raw oil, and then go sell it for 12 cents a gallon? Whoever believes crap like that needs a catscan. The point of this is just to inform that while yes gas is high we still have the best prices in the world!

I subscribe to Rolling Stone. I cannot say that I have seen anything uncredible in the magazine. Most of stories that I like are the reporting on the state of the union. The 12 cent a gallon gas in China was NOT reported by Rolling Stone. I think Richard said it was seen on the news. I do not know what he was watching, but it was not Rolling Stone.

It was in Venezuela that gas is the equivalent of 12 cents a gallon. In Iran it is 35 cents a gallon. Pay attention folks.

There has to be more to this story -- those countries have to be subsidizing that cost somehow.

You do realize that the report for gas that cheap in Venezuela was published 2 years ago - now it trades slightly higher. However, as in all economies there is this whole supply and demand curve. Being that the average Household Income for a Venezuelan family is about 8500000 Bolivar (or $4000 USD) annually they could simply not buy gas at our prices. If you had to sustain an entire family on $80 a week do you think buying gas for a car would be possible? No. Oil companies understand that they can not sell gas all over the world at one uniform price. Prices are adjusted for each economy independantly being that the world does not operate as one single open market. I am not going to bat for the oil companies here but it can be much worse. For instance take the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland and average their Household Income compared to the US - they make ~28% less yearly yet pay ~215% more for their gas! I will compile a list of average GDP and compare that to avg. gas prices and see who gets the most gas for their equivalent currency.
