Do you clay EVERY car that you detail?

Frank, it sounds like you do not believe it clay at all. How come? I admit I have only clayed about 3 cars, 2 new ones and 1 used one and was really impressed with the results. I read opinions here and agree with its ability to remove contamination easily so why would a guy with your knowledge be against it?

I clay the car as part of the wash process.

I clay only if the client pays for it. If the vehicle needs to be clayed I will point it out to the client, let them feel the surface so they understand what I am talking about and explain the process I will use to correct it. If at that point they do not want to pay for the service I will not do it whether it needs it or not.

Yeah this is what i do as well. It's usually an easy sell if you take the client over to feel your paint as well as hes' own. It's included in my top end detail but i also offer it ala-carte.

It sounds like a lot of you just focus on the horizontal surfaces as far as claying.

But I've found that most of the tiny rust spots that the clay pulls out are found on the sides of the car. I figure this is the most important area to clay, so the rust spots are removed before they get any worse.

Exactly! More junk there then any other part of the car. (first time buyers)

Only if they're paying for it and I do offer and explain it to them. I only encounter a few vehicles that absolutely need to be clayed to look their best.
