I did for an older car we owned and for my girlfriend, but i don't for our 1993 4 cylinder accord.. For some reason, the filter screws on half-way, and then I cant get it to go any further by hand, and I dont want to screw up the threads w/ a wrench. I've tried fram and pennzoil filters and they both have this same problem.. Can anyone help out with this? Warner filters fit on perfectly but I don't know where to buy these..

Take it to Toyota near work. 30 bucks Canadian oil & filter.
 
Yes : Mobil one and Pure one filter. This way I know that it is done right and if gives me an opportunity to check the car for needed repairs. Thank Gob for rhino ramps. The only PIA is getting rid of the oil.
 
Z28- Yes - once a year ( driven ~1500 miles / year) with Mobil 1

LS400 - No - family mechanic does this job.

Escort- No. Company car with maintainance program

Alfa racecar - after every race with Redline 10w40 and K&N oil filter
 
I've always been able to change my oil without need to jack the car up. This was true up until the Aurora (even on the Corvette I could do that). The Aurora has plenty of room for me, but not for the drain pan. It holds 8 quarts of oil, so I had to buy a bigger pan for it. Unfortunately it is too tall to fit under the car... I really hate having to jack it, though.



I do as much maintenance myself as I can. I just never trust anyone else. Nobody else cares as much for my cars as I do.



I agree that disposing of the oil is probably the biggest pain of doing it yourself.
 
I've always changed the oil on all my cars. I currently maintain two cars: '97 Maxima and '00 Honda Odyssey. Oil changes every 3,000 miles with Castrol 5/30 and Fram Filters (although I'm switching to dealer OEM filters after my existing stock runs out). I use a Sears floor jack to lift the car up. I also fillup the new filter with oil before screwing onto the filter housing. No problem disposing motor oil here in Fairfield CT. The town recycling center accepts it.

AND I WATCH THEM LIKE A HAWK!



I get out of the car and make sure they do it right. I alway tell the guy, before he starts, that this is a show-car, so he needs to be very careful not to get oil on anything.



I've gotten to know them and they have always done a good job for me.

If you sit in your car and let them do it unsupervised, your askin' for trouble.

Same with me right down to the rhino ramps(love those things - someone here recommended them). I just changed the Jetta's two days ago, realized it was past due (a little). Unfortunately I had water dripping on my face as the snow melted that was up under the shroud; other than that and the tiny diameter filter it went ok.
 
no - I go to a small chain of stores called "victory lane" where they do mobil 1 oil and filter for $60.50 plus they sell aquapel and other stuff...



they know I care for my car so they're always careful about what they do...

First off, Fram and Penzoil are both made by Allied Signal (same filter). Secondly, through my research Fram oil filters don't have a very good reputation. I have owned two Accords with this same engine and have never had to use a filter wrench on either. I curretly use a Supertech Oil filter (2808) from WalMart. These filters are made by Champion Labs who also make filters for Mobil 1 and for ~$2 you can't go wrong. There are other quality filters out there but since I change my oil every 3,500 miles I can't justify spending the $'s when this one works and rates well. why pay forty bucks when I can do my own for twenty?



I just pull the truck in the garage, slide under and unscrew the plug. Go inside and do absolutely nothing, then come back out and all the oil is in the catcher tub. Take the filter off,put a new one 1/2 full of oil on and then put the new oil in. Takes 1/2 hour. half of that i am not even doing anything waiting for oil to drain.
 
I take my car to the gas station around the corner from my house. i started going there mainly because it was cole when i bought the car and i dont have a garage. i also thought it would be a hastle to dispose of the oil but now that i can take it to my work and dispose of it there i think i'll be doing it myself this summer.



They only charge $25 canadian and i they're trustworthy so its hard to complain.

Thanks for saving me some typing Rightlane ;) I currently use traditional jack and stands though.



Ditto on the oil disposal too. I drain it into one of those drain cans with the large lid on the side so you can supposedly dump it easier. I don't risk it and dump it into a large juice jug with a handle instead.



The only times I've had it done by a $20 Cdn drive in/out lube shop is if it's in the dead of winter and it's one of the beaters. I don't like them to do it because they: a) use Fram filters b) overtighten the drain plug c) high pressure you to get other stuff done too.



I also read the bad stuff about the Fram filters, and don't doubt it because they do manufacture a lot of cheap generic branded filters for other people and are also the least expensive brand. Good enough for the beaters though.

Wow. That's pretty much my response, too, almost to the letter. Mobile1/PureOne, Rhino ramps, and I hate hauling the used oil to the parts store for recycling.

I stopped about 8 years ago because I found it wasn't really saving me any money and I didn't want to deal with the disposal problem. Now, I just call the BMW or Porsche dealer, make an appointment and wait the 30-45 minutes for them to do it. Besides, how car you argue with a $49 oil change on a car that takes 12 qrts of oil and two filters?
 
I change my own oil, Mobil 1 and Motorcraft filters. Rhino ramps rule. :p



I do almost all my own repair work. I HATE other people messing around with my cars. The only way I take it to a shop is if the work is just to extensive for me to handle. Really there isn't much I can't do here, I even have several Automotive Diagnostic scanners here at my house.

:shocked all that on a little V6 porsche engine?? Jeez, my chevy blazer only takes 4.5 quarts and has one dinky filter.... :cool: wonder why it takes all that oil? not like you're running the TT are you?
