Different qualities in different microfibers?

Hey guys,

Is there a difference between, say, Autozone or Oreilly's type microfiber cloths and the catalog/mail order type microfibers? I've never personally handled or used any other cloth besides the one from part store chains. Anyone have any preferences?

If there is already a thread about this, please give me the link. I searched for "best microfiber" and didnt get much. Thanks

Yes. The microfibers sold by many of the popular vendors here are much more plush and have better edges than the microfibers you can get at most stores.

One exception is Meguiar's Supreme Shine or Ultimate Wipe, both being great OTC microfiber towels.

Think of it like this: Vendor microfibers are usually more expensive per towel, but you get better quality, which means less scratching/marring, and they'll last you a LONG time if you care for them.

That's what I thought. I have always been a big believer of "you get what you pay for".

I have a brand new wax kit from Griots with a few in there, I havent even opened it yet though. I'll try them. Thanks

That is true with MF's, however, you can still pay different amounts for the same thing.

Shop around, watch for sales, and remember that the cheap ones from WalMart or Target also can have a place for certain things, like interior/trim/tire dressing.

I'm no MF expert, and I have asked here before the difference between them, but I have to say, I have Excel MF's and I have Walmart MF's and I also have Costco MF"s...I can't tell the difference between them for the life of me....

In my experience of surveying dozens of microfiber brands, you do generally get what you pay for. There are some deals but generally you have to pay more for better quality. The mf from PakShak and AutoGeek remain the tops in my book but they cost a bit more. Poorboys and Wayne's Towels are also great and can be often gotten on a deal.

I tend to use towels at both ends of the spectrum, cheapies for really dirty work, boutiques for QD, wax removal, general polishing activities (anything that touches the paint).

I'm not sure I would put Excel in the same camp as WalMart and Costco. Excel is a bit better in my experience. They make a great edgeless towel too that I have not seen at WalMart or Costco.

There are some boutiques that I think charge too much - Griot's towels are pricey but just mediocre in my experience for instance. Megs are convenient OTC and cheap but their towels are definitely in a middle ground between Costco and the better boutiques.

I generally like PakShak so much with his discount he's competitive so I just buy mostly there. I do have my eye on a DP Monster Fluffy soon.

IMO, the difference is in the durability/integrity of the towel. The costco towels may start out fine, but over time they will not hold up. I have some pak shaks circa 00 and they are still as soft as can be after *multiple* washes.

Now, that's not to say you can't use the costco MF's on paint, but they need to be hand selected for softness, then recycled to "lesser" duties sooner. Ordering from vendors cuts this completely out of the equation.

Hi Chris!!! :dance :welcome

Joe,

Whats up brother. Glad you chimed in... I just want to make sure I dont ruin this beautiful finish on the Cobra by using inferior microfibers next time I do some polishing or waxing to it.. I am going to try to get by Lowe's tonight or tomorrow for the PC..

I have both Costco towels and Excel towels. The Excel towels are better than the Costco towels by quite a bit. I want to try out Pakshak towels, but they're just too much money for me.

There is a big difference between my Excel supreme MFs and my WalMart MFs (whether the MicroTex or Hometex brand).

I would not use those on paint. I'm even hesitant to use them on the door jambs, but I don't want to get dirt/grease on my good MFs.

I havent used any of the vendor brands, But I do use the Vroom towels at target. I use them once on the paint and then toss them to lesser duties. I have very few swirls that probably isnt from using "cheaper" towels anyway. Just normal driving.
