Did a little marketing research on a local SHOP

I'm writing a business plan as many of you know and I found some amazing numbers, etc.



Details Details Details a shop in Rockville, MD makes some money.





*$900,000 in revenue.

*does a monthly mailing (3000-4000) they say 300,000 to 400,000 a month and have a hit rate of 40%.

*the founder went to college for 2-3 years and dropped out.
 
That was the shop I was talking about in the other thread about Potomac, Md where several of the people in my office have taken their cars for $150-250 a pop.
 
What's the time frame for their revenue figures?



$900K/year is incredible, espeically at $250/car....works out to about 13 cars per day at $250/car.
 
First, I know nothing of this particular detail shop. But let's not rush to judgement quite so quickly. Zeibart, for all their faults, does pretty substantial 'per store' numbers. Does this shop sell stereos and alarms? Window tinting? PDR?



How many bays do they have? Are they also mobile? Are they working at ten in the evening (fleet work)?



I, too would be amazed if they are doing 11- 15 cars per day at $250...



Ever stop by your regional auto auction's recon center? Those guys move thru some cars!



Just a few thoughts..Me? I don't want that kind of volume - to me, it just doesn't equate with the quality work that I choose to do

That shop probably does a lot of reconditioning work for dealers and the like. I briefly worked at a shop like that. They did 8-10 complete details a day, plus re-dying interiors, rust proofing, minor dent and rust repair.



It is possible to do quality work at that pace if you are careful at selecting your staff and equipment. Just imagine if you were working with 6 autopia quality detailers in a well equipped facility. How many cars will roll out of that shop sparkling by the end of the day?
 
You could pump out the cars if you had several people working on them. I believe another Pro detailer I talked to said he can do complete details including three step paint and extracting interior in 3 to 3.5 hours with one person helping. 3 cars a day per 2 person group x 5 detail bays. That's 15 cars a day.



Got to remember he isn't getting $250 for each full detail. He could also be having people pump out basic wash packages for like $20. Get a few people working in a chain how fast can a car go through? 20mins? Lets just say 3 cars an hour open. Open say 9 hours a day that is 27 wash packages in a day for a total of 540... ok, that isn't a lot of money. Nevermind.
 
Before I found Autopia, I took my car to the hand car wash. $7.00 Cdn. It took the guy about 10 minutes. He used a lambskin mitt to wash, but I don't think he rinsed it out. He used a chamy to dry. He wet the whole car at a station that sprays water from all angles - top, sides, botton. I didn't notice what the rag looked like that he used to wipe the door jams.
 
As far as the services they have to offer look here: Details Details Details they do paintless dent removal, and things of that nature. They do work for a local car dealership (Rosenthal Acura) I am going to start talking to the manager of that dealership as I know him through the school newspaper. Apparently their work is some of the best in the area. I am still yet to watch them detail a car, but I think at some point and time I will stop by.
 
He's been at it for quite a while. He was in business when I lived in Gaithersburg back in he mid 1980's So, it's not a big shock to me that you could build that kind of business in a 15-18 year period.
 
There's a guy here in Charlotte, NC, never went to college, started detailing when he was in high school. He's now in his mid-20's, revenue of $3 or $4 million. He runs shops, dealerships, and mobile units all over the city. Not bad.
