if they took all those years going to school, anyone with a PhD can call themselves doctors, IMO.

I feel like i'm contributing to the wrong portion of the conversation...

The term "Doctor" actually refers to someone with a doctorate degree, not so much the medical physicians. The academic Doctor is a much older term, and usage of the word rather than someone in the medical field (who more specifically should be a Doctor of Medicine, or M.D.).
