Dewalt Rotary speed control?

Ok ... So I am still looking around at what type of polisher I want. I was initially considering a PC but im now leaning more towards a rotary. Ive always been partial to Dewalt power tools but im not so sure about the polisher. The reason being Ive used the makita rotary before (borrowed) and I liked the ability to control the speed with the dial. So my question is how easy is it to control the speed with the dewalt? And how do you know approximately how many rpm's youre at? Thanks!

I have the DeWalt 849 and use it the most. It does have a dial that you turn to adjust the RPMs. It's very easy to control the speed since the RPM control is right there on top of the handle. If you get the DeWalt, you wont be disappointed.

oh ok thanks!! I was under the impression that there wasnt a speed control other than the trigger. I guess I should read a little closer:o Dewalt it is!!!

I have the same DeWalt and yes there is a dial on top to control the speed and the trigger can also be used to control the speed [variable speed trigger]. When you hammer down the trigger it will only go as fast as the dial setting and not any faster. I believe it's a 1,000 - 3,000 rpm rotary --- I almost never take it past 1,200 rpm since my paint is kept in pretty good condition.

I have both the PC and the rotary, in my opinion the PC is easier to use (lighter, smaller, easier to manuever) but the rotary is fast and makes quick work of polishing. When it comes to applying the wax I will use the PC because I feel it works the wax into the paint a little better.
