DeWalt 849 VS Porter Cable 7424

LikeaRock

...Dreaming on an E92....
I'm finally going to be making my order for some poilishes and new waxes next week, and a new buffer is on my list. The guy that I've been talking to at a local detailing supply store mentioned that I shouldn't even bother with the PC and go straight to a rotary like the 849. I'm a bit worried as I've only detailed one car with a rotary, and it was my silver Saturn, so I don't know what the outcome would be on another color...He mentioned he's seen some beautiful work with orbitals, and that he might not like them due to his personal techniques...

I really think I'm going to go with the PC since I've seen some great work done with them, and their ease of use really sparks my attention too. Just looking for some final opinions from everyone!

Thanks!

Unless you're absolutely sure that you won't do any damage with the rotary you'll want to get the PC to start. I use both and I think that the PC, while it can't tackle some of the defects that the rotary can, is more versatile for applying LSPs and is reasonably useful for eveything else (I say reasonably because it is far better than the PC for heavier defects, if you've never used one give it a try, You'll be amazed). It's your choice, if you didn't really want to choose you could get the PC and get 5" backing plates for both PC and rotary, then you get one of the Harbor Freight Rotaries to get used to it. When the HF one outlives its useful life you can then step up to a dewalt or similar model.

That's what I used on my Saturn was a HF rotary, it seemed to do the job fairly well, especially for it being my first full detail with a rotary!

And just to clarify it for you, I guess I DIDN'T run the rotary up to 5,000 rpms. I thought the numbers on the dial meant how many RPM's I was running it at, not the speed settings...oops  Sorry about the confusion!

I'm almost positive that I'm going to order the PC for now, I'd feel a LOT more confident using one over a rotary. I've been using our DeWalt orbital at work a lot, and it's incredibly easy to use, we just don't have the right cutting pads to remove ALL the defects...

One question though...Which pads should I go with? I'm looking at the high-gloss foam pads on PAC, mainly because they're cheaper, but I figure I might as well go with something like the Edge pads if they're worth the extra money.

Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it! :beer_smil

Well, I get my paycheck tomorrow, so I'll probably be ordering the PC Saturda or Sunday, and a set of Edge pads to go with it. Any last minute reccomendations?

Thanks

i actually have a PC 7424 for sale, fairly new in perfect condition with all the original packaging (also in perfect condition). i also have 2 each(new and unused) of the LC 6" high gloss red, black, and white pads, and the 5" and 6" backing plates. i'm looking to move all that for a very reasonable price, about the cost for a new PC without anything, shipping included. PM me if you're interested.

Dewalts owns !!! but if you dont know what you are doin you will make more swirls!! porter cable likes to toss buffing pads off.. But works great for swirl removal..

DeWalt is a tough machine to use. I'm not as thrilled with the setting dial position, but there is a lot of power, relatively low noise, and excellent handling (although I've only used light foam, heavy foam, lamb's wool, and the Farecla system; I haven't had it that long). If you aren't working on defects, cutting, etc., and mostly in LSP, go with a lighter, cheaper, less hazardous machine. The DeWalt, if you catch an edge, will hold to the edge, shred the foam pad, or burn through.

Not an expert opinion, but PC or equiv is probably good.

I've been using a porter cable for 3 years and am disappointed in its performance nowadays. I have become proficient and I find that it is quite limiting in actually removing deep swirls and scratches. I've made the move to a dewalt 849 and will employ both. Rotary for smr work and PC for applying pre-sealants and lsp's.

I'm simply got sick and tired of the hours of working on hoods, fenders, and getting "just a slight " improvement in swirl removing where i can reduce the time by half and have fully removed swirls and scratches.

just my $.02
