Detailing videos...

There are many out there and on nearly every subject, yet somehow every day there's a post or e-mail asking for a video of this and that, etc.

So, with that in mind, in addition to me wanting content for my site so clients can easily find it and learn about proper automotive care and detailing (started last year but got sidetracked), I'll be doing a bunch of videos in the next few months on just about every aspect of my detailing routine... these won't be some fancy, produced, or even properly narrated videos but they will make sense and you'll get to see me on video :xyxthumbs

So far I've done these two quick videos (along with like 15 others from last fall that either need editing or are trash):

Polishing:

YouTube - Makita polishing with Meg's #95 and LC PFW

Claying:

YouTube - Claying

Expect the future ones to be something like that... hopefully better resolution and recorded when I'm not hung over (which I won't be since this time I'll probably use my car for many instead of my mom's crappy corolla used for the claying video)

I have plans to do the following: (please keep in mind some of these will be with the intention that a 10 year old who scratches cars for a living will be able to learn to do the opposite)

Washing paint

Drying (quick/pre-polish drying as well as maintenance drying to prevent swirls)

Claying (maybe another one showing different bars or something like that)

Pad priming... both foam and PFW and both for rotary and PC/G110

Polishing a section + size of section

Applying polish after pad is primed

Cleaning pads after 1-2 sections

Taping off a car prior to polishing

Applying/removing KSG

Video of entire process done with photos or a fast rate video.

I will consider any requests and any special requests I'll do my best (like stand on one foot while operating a Makita or listen to Britney Spears while claying :nono)

I'd like to see "cleaning pads" one..

I'm going to do 2 of those... one will be just a quick how to for cleaning pads while polishing, and the other will show how I clean/wash the pads after a job is done... I'm hoping to do these two by the end of the weekend.

ivan i just watched them both. its always nice to see how other people do it! you have a good start so far! keep doing them. maybe if i could suggest something. i always wanted to do some beginner stuff. i see you compounding a car. after 11 years of this i know what your doing. maybe exsplain some beginner stuff like properly taping. litttle things like that is what i think a newbie needs to see. great work so far keep it up!

I think we're thinking in the same direction... my intention is/was to make a 'detailing for dummies' type videos... some will scratch their head wondering why in hell I'm wasting time recording something but it will help many... oh and taping is on the list already... thanks!

Lecchilo, nice work clear and concise. How about FLEX or DA videos. KBM seems to be a hot topic these days. Keep up the good work!!

Don't have the Flex (unless I borrow one from someone locally) but I'll do some PC/rotary comparison videos and with different pad/polish combos.

These.

Thank you very much for this :bigups:

If I may offer a little constructive criticism (take or leave it) on your claying technique:

  1. Speed things up by using a larger portion of the clay bar for a larger surface area
  2. Add some pressure. Go as fast as you like, but you can reduce the number of passes by using more pressure in the process. The OTC clay is very mild and you really shouldn't have any concerns about marring unless your paint is so soft it swirls just by looking at it. If that's the case then you should only clay when you're going to follow it up with a polish step
  3. Reducing the amount of clay lube you're using will give the clay a little more bite resulting in fewer passes and speed up the entire process

Good luck with the videos. That's a lot of work.

That's why I used a lot of lube and Meg's Smooth surface bar... I use Clay Magic red or blue (mostly blue) however I use similar pieces in case I drop it, and man have I dropped a few back in the day... now I hold onto clay like it's gold haha
