Detailing Tires

I was under the impression that it's the use of silicone-based dressings like Armorall that accelerates deterioration

I bought some new Dunlops about a year ago and they came with a warning not to use tire dressings with petrollium distillates (sp?)...ie the glop on, sling off, look I don't like tire dressings. They stated a breakdown of the sidewall and loss of UV protection. These types of dressings would often turn my tires brown as well...which that Dunlop warning also said. I've switched to 303 for my tires. Great look and it's water based so I've had no issues with the above; but because it's water based, it doesn't last that long.

Yeah, I read something recently that Michelin was going to void warranties if you use PD-based products like ArmorAll. Thanks for the additional info.

Eagle One Concours/Satin Tire finish is by far the finest product out there. Hard to find, but once you use it, you will never go back.

Spray it on, let it sit for an hour or so and buff out. Perfect "new tire" finish. None of that wet look crap.

As said, stay away from stuff with petroleum distillates or "stoddard solvent" as one company tries to call it.

Regualr Armor All should be safe these days. But with ALL brands stay away from stuff that contains PDs. Usually they're the clear, colourless "ultra shine" stuff, but you can just read the warnings on the back.

If the dressing doesn't warn about PDs and it seems to be water-based and milky looking, it's probably PDMS and just as safe as 303 or several other products. How good it is is another question of course....

PS: What the heck is in the Eagle One WET Gel dressing? It's clear and colourless but doesn't warn about anything....

EO A2Z wheel cleaner is my favorite. I actually enjoy watching it work and all the dirt come right off when I brush and hose it.

I am not sure, but I have seen the results, and it's pretty shiney, so I would stay away from it. I use the EO Protectant lotion on client cars and it gives a nice matte finish, but doesn't last too long. For my own car, I still prefer the regular (not hi-gloss) Endurance. It's lasting about 3 weeks, even though we have been getting rain every day for about 40 days straight now (it seems).

water. It's purplish, and smells like grapes. I don't think anyone from here would recommend an oil based product for your tires.

dont believe so?

i first wet rim/tire, then wash with reg soap, Gold Glass, i use a faily stiff brush, bought it at walmart, it was cheap and all i really need, although id like to get one from CMA, i then dry (pat dry) tire with terry cloth, then spray 303 all around tire, moving car forward a tad to insure complete coverage, i usually wait about 15+ min, then gently blot up any excess, but theres usually not much, this has been my process for a while, i love the satin look from 303, but it is $$, so i may use #40 more often?

Although I have been called a Zaino fanatic, I see nothing special in their tire dressing - and for the price ????

I was VERY impressed with Lanes tire cleaner. It contains a bleach and cleans deep. After 3 scrubbings, the rinse water was still running off dirty.

Although it also seems expensive, it's cut 1:1 and there's a 50% off sale through tomorrow (Monday at midnight) by using the discount code " hot ". That makes their posted price the equivalent cost per gallon.

Actually, I like their entire "tire and wheel" package, which further reduces the cost.

BTW, I tried Lanes because of their New Car Scent (several previous posts) - not impressed. Smells nice, but doesn't last long and definitely does not smell like a new car.

I use APC+ and EF HI-Intensity on my Tires Matters which one is more handy. I let it soke then rinse then I dry the tires with a terry towel and apply Eagle One wet tire Gel amazing stuff Goes on and off extremly easy and doesnt leave spots. I have noticed that the spots you get is because of water mixing into the process like driping from the top or sidewall. As for the cracking with useing PD and Silicones dont worry about I would call it just anthor "Myth" Even if it damages your tires by the time they crack you will most likely not have the car or the tires.

1. Rinse with water

2. Scrub w/ 2x strength car shampoo

3. Rinse

4. Scrub with heavy duty cleaner/degreaser (from

auto parts store).

5. Rinse and repeat step 5 until no more grime comes

off of tire.

6. Dry.

7. Dress w/ Maguiar's Endurance tire dressing.

Tires come out looking better than new.:D

I beg to differ! See the comments earlier in this thread about tire companies voiding warranties when you use "bad" silicones. And look at this thread for a better understanding of the action of "good" and "bad" silicones.

has anyone tried black magic tire foam spray? that stuff works pretty good i just put some on my tires yesterday
