Detailing rig half-and-half detailed... ever seen it?

Hey Everyone,

I

m sure we've all thought about this at one point or another, but has anyone actually SEEN or driven a half-and-half display?

Got myself a beat-up '92 Astrovan for a temporary rig, and its actually in great shape for its mileage... but has been a company work-truck for the last 10 years... so VERY dirty inside & out.

Already cleaned the inside...about 25% anyway.. and I tried polishing a fender and of course, it came up beautifully.

Wondering if I should tape off half the truck and only do one side??? Or would I be best just to drive the best example of a '92 Astrovan with 300k on it?

Well I guess I just answered my own question, do it all! Always want to show the best to customers.... DUH

Ok might as well post this anyway :)

do it!!!! its great advertisement IMO! SHOWING the differences is better than TELLING the differences.

everytime I tell people I can make their car look better, they are like "oh it already looks good. But when I SHOW them, they are blown away!

Yeah, I think that sounds like a killer idea. wash the other side with brushes and dawn and no wax, your clean side the proper way.

I'd just make sure you label what you are doing so people driving on the dirty side of your van dont think that is and example of your work.

thats an awesome idea. but like like brandon said be sure and label the sides so people just dont think you are moron haha

OK! I'm gonna do it!

This van is such a POS anyway I might as well make half of it shiny... Then while I'm getting my lettering printed I'll get some extras that say something like "Before" and "After" for the applicable sides....

This is gonna be awesome! Already did half the hood, and its night & day, especially because its BLACK!

Here another thing to consider, normally you would think to tape the van right down the middle, splitting the drivers side and passenger side, but its easier for people to see a difference if the before and after are on the same side. If you tape it down the middle, they would have to walk around to the other side to see the difference. Also, think of when you are at a stop light...a person will be able to see the before and after all at once and it will have a bigger impact on them.

does that make sense??

Agreed. Do a top and bottom on the sides.

After driving around a bit today... realized that I need to do something else... Half and half sides wouldn't work because nobody can see both sides at the same time...

Half and half on panels would just look wierd.

So I'm going to polish both sides completely, and half-and-half both the hood and the tailgate/hatch. That way it looks good while driving, but you can also demonstrate the difference polishing can make.

And its easier to label!

wrong....its a POS van, why do you care what it looks like? Its going to look stupid with half and half hood anyway, make every panel a 1/2 and 1/2. its rolling advertisement if done right, not your DD! If it is your DD, then pick up another one!

I am looking for a free car from someone who just wants to get rid of one in semi good/bad shape that I can do this with and just leave it parked with some graphics on it. If I can drive it places, that would be all the more better. Its not something I am going to dump any money into...

you should just do all the panels half and half. that would look better than just the hood and hatch done like that. and if you do it all everyone will be able to see it no matter what side they are on.

Thats true....

We'll see how it goes, first I need to fix all the doors so everything works right, then empty it and clean the inside (I aint working out of a dirty vehicle!).

Then I will start on my outside!

Should I clean one wheel and leave the other dirty? What do you think about the wheels?

I don't think that cleaning one wheel and leaving the other dirty is a good idea.

I could see a lot of people just not "getting it" thinking that it looks weird; like you couldn't get one of the wheels clean.

I think the half and half on each panel is a great idea! :werd: Post pics when you're done! :showpics

Ok I Half/Half'd the drivers door, and I think thats the only panel I will half-half... It just will look too wierd on the rear 1/4's and the fenders, the hood is good for it but it's so rock-chipped there's no point.

I'm going to detail the hell outta this thing (yes clean all the wheels, I musta been tired or something) and leave the drivers door half and half.

Might do the passenger door the same.

Rest of the van gets polished!

I would do the front half of the van and leave the rear section undone. And I would detail the passenger side interior and not touch the driver's side to show the difference. It also allows you to get the drivers side as dirty as you want to with no consequences and actually adds to the overall change.

Yeah, I've put some thought into this very same idea.

Well I am regretting only doing the drivers door half-half so far...

Sure its a great example... but sitting in a parking lot it doesn't look good yet! I need some decals QUICK!

I polished the rest of the drivers side, leaving only half the drivers door unpolished... Looks obviously unpolished for sure, I need lettering now... not later... guess thats why it's bugging me!

Interior has already been cleaned moderately, waiting until I fix the windows (currently stuck down) before I clean it properly!

Need to get some beefy locks for it as well, I am not storing $2000 worth of equipment in a van secured by GM locks. haha!
