detailing business out of control, dont know how to proceed?

no the bag and rock idea i came up by myself after i tried a few methods that didnt work. Door to door knocking way to time consuming, and stuffing in mailboxes,on flag post of mail boxes or touching the mail box is a crime. So the bag idea worked out great, but maybe it is not for everyone. The criminal justice thing is a back up plan, because i never really had this type of image of the detailing business when i started colleget back in 2000. So ill be done this time next year and earn my 4 year degree hopefully and always have that to fall back on. I realize that you will never make the money you can working for yourself, than MOST jobs are willing to pay. Im just pretty amazed by how many details i can get without really advertising at all. All i have for this year to be totally honest is a business card, that is it. My other material is outdated due to price increases, services offered etc. I have 11 full details booked this week without really do any work besides the actual details. If i dare to advertise I would like to see how much business i would get,but i know i coudlnt handle it all nor do i perfer to get that many.

Maybe it is just the area im in that is why i do so well. i never bad mouth any competition, just becasue i dont know my competition that well. I know their prices, services offered, locations, but not their quality of work as much. I do stop by these places and tend to park my vehicle around the corner and "inspect" the cars while they are parked out front alll done and ready for pickup. Granted most of these places prices are cheap as hell and most of the cars are not the best to begin in the first place. I hear mostly from customers that I get, that these places suck, they do a ****** job and what not. ALso being mobile is another big thing and having a shop location as well. It is easy for people to drop off their vehicle at the shop or they can get the mobile service, whichever work best. Of coarse you dont see the bag idea working, since you never tried it. I mean you say your arm is worth more, but im not talking about a huge rock in the bag. The rock serves as the purpose of weight so the item doesnt blow away and you can get them far enough on the grass off the sidewalk etc without it blowing away. I can quickly distribute the flyers so once i get a few calls from these, i have no cornered that whole development area MOST TIMES. Why? 1. Most likely not another mobile detailer working that development, or i would have not gotten a call. 2. Maybe there is but he isnt as good, so they are ready for a change. 3. Once i get a couple cars which are typically nicer vehicles im in. All day long people will come up and ask for a business car and will lurk around waiting for the end result to see how it turned out. All of a sudden when im packing up, or finishing up, neighbors tend to have "important" issues or have to go see their neighbor who just recieved the service to chat about things. Then the neighbor ask oh i see you just had your car detailed, they both walk up and they see it looks great and book right there.

I just wish i could find a good chemical company to actually work with me to produce my own product line as Nick did from detail king, then i can really move into the direction I want to. I wont work with a company who puts out ****** chemicals and have my name go on it, because i want them to actually work rather than just collect money. His product line made by a company in Pittsburgh is top notch, but they arnt in my area for distribution. Currently im calling many companies to actually try to get my product line developed and also working on my safety sheets which is also very hard to do. If i fail at least i know i tired,so either way i look at it as a win win situation.

Quamen: “Again the tv thing will be played during shopping,at the grocery store,in traffic etc etc. DOGEd. You dont see it selling details because you have never tried it. Not to be negative but most people on this board do not think outside the box,and that is what it is all about. People tend to follow what other do,but i keep trying new things to see what works and keeping track of responses etc. I just really cant wait till im done with school cause that is my number 1 priority.

I’m interested if the rock & bag idea came from Nick Vacco of Detail King? Believe me, I’m a out of the box thinker. I don’t see myself ordering a Yard of colored rocks then putting them one by one in a baggy with information. Not only that but you have to then travel in up-scale neighborhood throwing them into driveways, 1000 times a day. Dude, like I said in my previous posts, I’m not seeing the reality of it. Maybe that works for $35 lawn jobs but not $250 detailings? No, I wont be trying it because my arm & shoulder are worth more then that.

Quamen: “5000-6000 per month by that time ill make that per week

Not being in Criminal Justice you wont!!!

Ill openly admit most of my materail and ideas have come from Nick Vacco of Detail King, because i see it has worked for him. I mean no wonder they guy makes over a million a year teaching people how to start their own business.

I have to ask you this, because you brought this up last year, when Detail King was only making $700K...is that the gross of his business, or his personal gross? Because I frankly don't believe that his personal income is over $1,000,000, or $700K for that matter. If it is, I'm opening up my own detailing school on Monday.

I dont know exactly what the income is, but that is the gross of the business. WIth 2 training schools one in Californai, One in Pa, on 2 on the road marketing seminars each month, and marketing skills that would blow anyone mind, trust me he does VERY VERY WELL! Also i know it takes alot of money to run a business, but i do sit back and realize how he keeps things relatively cheap and in certain areas saves a ton of money by doing things a little bit more low key. Facility, product storage, etc etc. IT is all about taking it to the next level, and if your opening a detailing school best of luck. IF you dont have a product line made, i wouldnt even consider it. They might come to you, then order from him. Just adding figures alone of gross income for traning alone not talking about product sales, or accounts with dealerships for new car preps, the figures would reach over 300 k easily.

As long as you realize the difference between gross and net, that he could gross $1 million and still be losing money. He may be raking it in, but just because you own your own business doesn't mean you're rich or making tons of money.

Why does Mr. Nick Vacco feel the need to publicly offer his net or gross income to anybody? Could he be trying to sell someone something LOL....................????

I understand throwing 1,000 rocks a day, be it light or heavy is going to hurt. If your throwing 6 rocks in a minute, 1 every 10sec, that equals 6rks x 60min or 360 rocks a hour.

That is nuts not rocks LOL........

well he has been in this business for many years, and i highly doubt he is losing money by the way things appear but i could be wrong. Whatever the case maybe, i know my goals and ill keep trying to achieve them. Good luck with your school, but get a product line.

Call him and go to his house and see how he lives. If you are impressed, then follow his lead.

You know, I'm sure the guy is doing well. It's just a little misleading to mention the gross of his business like it is his personal gross or net income. That's like saying that Bill Ford makes $100 billion a year as CEO of Ford....because that is the gross revenue of FoMoCo. If I'm not mistaken Bill Gates makes one dollar a year in his position at Microsoft.

quamen, I have my own manaufacturing company for ALL detailing products. If you want your own formulations done for your own waxes, polishes, compoundes, sealants, dressings, cleaners, and labeling/design ect... give me email, lets see what we can do to make those dreams come true a little faster!

hahaha who cares, maybe there will come a better polish/wax to make things easier/better by him mentioning it on here, and someone else picking up on it and giving him a call....he is not promoting a particular product, just some help!!!!

I dont remember saying, promoting, or marketing any names, web-sites, ect... I answered a question to further help one of the guys on this forum to better his business and further his dreams.

His age has nothing to do with it. The rules are you cannot post contact information that has to do with your business directly in threads. PM all you want but you can't directly post it. We all have to follow this rule. Cut Steve some slack, he probably has been warned (like I have) about the posting rules and wants everyone else to have to follow the same rules.

I can't even post my cell phone number because it is my business line same with my e-mail-I even had to take out my smilie site because it is hosted on my business site. It is probably best to just ask anyone interested to contact you via PM so there are no misunderstandings. :)
