As you can tell from the title, this was the biggest restoration I've done to date. It's red with a ton of oxidation. This was yet another referral. The customer is about to sell this vehicle so he wanted it extremely clean. He has over 10k in mods to it. 329HP to the wheels on pump gas; 389WHP on 104 octane! This was the first time I got a tip before I even started on a vehicle.

Here's what it got:

(Actually took some before shots!)

NXT Tech Wash

(Clayed while during the wash cycle)

Meguiar's #80

(EDGE2K Yellow Pad at #6)

Had to clean this thing out 6 times! And it's double sided!

XMT Machine Glaze

(EDGE2K Orange Pad at #4 setting)

Souveran Liquid Wax-2 coats

(EDGE2K White Pad at #3 setting)

Once again, a tough one. About 5-6 hours on the paint alone. Interior was really clean so no shots of it. #80 took all the oxidation off with one pass and polished out nicely. Again, XMT glaze stole the show giving it the wet depth followed by the gloss of Souveran.

Customer was extremely pleased!

Befores.......

How do you like the #80 I'm thinking about buying a gallon myself.

I buy 4 gallons at a time. It's my staple swirl remover/polish. I can't live without it!

Is that a single stage paint job? after only 3 years the oxidation is terrible :( You revived it nicely awesome work.

Yep it sure is. Blew my mind. Had no idea. Thought Mitsu's had clear coats.

Wrongo.

I can not stand Mitsubishi Single Stage paint.. My Talon had the same single stage paint and it was the biggest crap ever. It was a 98 and by 04 the paint was down to bare metal on the roof.

Can anyone tell me why in the HELL do they still do it?

I did an 06 EVO earlier this year that seemed to have alot of clear coat on it.

The 03 and 04 Evos have single stage paint for the non-metallic colors. That means every color except silver which does have a clear coat. The 05+ Evos metallic or not all have clear coat.

Who knows why they did it... Save money? Possibly save on the weight of the car? Lots of people buy them and turn them into on and off road race cars and cutting a couple of lbs is worth some speed. The Brembo brake red paint fades and starts peeling (you can see it pink and peeling in the picture) and the carbon fiber spoiler clear coat fails if not properly sealed and waxed. Most Evos I've seen are pretty poorly maintained in terms of cosmetic appearance.

There's a running joke on the Evo forums about the white color on the 03 and 04s. It's called "Weightless White" from the factory and there's a reason it's called that. :lol
