DETAIL INQUIRY: 2001 M Coupe

My best friend had a 01 M Coupe. It got totaled about 2 months ago. He's finally found and bought another. It's been in a garage on jacks for about two years. (link to pics below) It's just been towed from Cincinnati yesterday. He said he tried to rinse off as much salt as he could last night. But that's all. And so my buddy's asked for my services to get his new baby back in good condition. Actually got to see the car today after work. It's practically brand new. I think most of the dirt on it came from the towing from Cinncinati yesterday/ last night. Washed off a small area and ran my hand over it. Doesn't "feel" like it needs a claying. But, I'll prob do so anyways. All the rubber seems to be soft and supple. The engine bay needs a little care. But, not much.

The interior seems a little dry. But, I've got some Sonus cleaner & conditioner that should warm it up. I've got a PC and plenty of Meg's products. Got some pads that have one, maybe two uses on them.

I've been detailing for a while. But this will be my first M Coupe detail. I've learned the shell is medium hard to hard. But, any other suggestions and/ or warnings for a 2001 M Coupe?

2001 BMW S54 M Coupe, Sapphire Black Metallic

Those are wonderful cars, mine is Imola Red and a '99 and still going strong, really strong.

Those stock wheels are called Roadstars and are clear coated so treat them accordingly.

The seal between the top of the windows and the rubber is a tenuous one and really supple rubber ensures a good watertight seal so another treatment with Gummi Pflege might be in order.

It's recommended by BMW for exactly that and available through Einzett at Car Wax, Car Polish, Car Care Products - einszett USA. Look in their 'winter care' section.

A nice touch would be to buy two bottles, keep one for yourself, and give the other to the buddy as a gift.

Only 6000 of those cars were ever made (worldwide) so they're very rare.

Your buddy is very close to being right on with that number. Most of the S54s were sold as 01 models with only a very few sold as 02s. I was referring to all the m coupes ever made (Z3) and here's the official numbers:

How many of each version were produced?

ECE S50 (LHD): 2,178 built from 04/98 thru 06/2000

ECE S50 (RHD): 821 built from 08/98 thru 06/2000

NA S52 (LHD): 2,180 built from 07/98 thru 06/2000

ECE S54 (LHD): 281 built from 02/2001 thru 05/2002

ECE S54 (RHD): 168 built from 02/2001 thru 05/2002

NA S54 (LHD): 690 built from 02/2001 thru 05/2002

So, imagine the North American ones (approx 2900) and factor in all the accidents and writeoffs since then and the only two left are his and mine. :)

Your pal is right.
