Degreasing Engine Bay - Your Tips and Tricks

I would normally just use TAW on a long soak/rinse but I think this oil needs a bit more *umph* to it to clean.

Doing some spring cleaning, and the engine bay in my ///M has got a bit of a grease buildup due to a unspotted oil leak.

I'm a OCD freak, so whatever hoses don't come out clean, I might just replace them.

Steaming is a option, I suppose, but to be frank, I don't enjoy using my Dupray on the car. Love it to Death in the house though.

What APC/Degreaser would you recommend for a long soak or short soak , agitate and rinseoff. Most of the buildup can't be seen from the top. The lower pan has been dropped and I've cleaned that off. Just from underneath.


Looking to spray and then hose or pressure wash off....

+1 with Todd - Meguiars Super Degreaser..

Been using it for years and it has always worked great, rinsed clean, not hurt anything, and prepares engine compartments for the next step perfectly..

I always dilute it per their recommendations, spray it liberally all over, let it dwell for a bit, and then pressure wash it all off..

Its very low foaming which is also a nice thing when rinsing.. It will remove all the oils from your hands, so make sure you wear gloves..

I never Agitate the engine itself because the pressure washer will remove everything.. The only parts I might need to agitate with a long handled medium/soft bristle fender brush is the inside of the hood bottom edges where a lot of greasy dirt tends to collect, and its harder to spray this since you are looking up at it backwards when the hood is up.. The back of the hood bottom sometimes needs a little brushing but watch the hoses for the windshield cleaners, any wires, etc...

Why do you want a 30 minute dwell time ? I never need it to dwell that long...
Your dwell time depends on a lot of things - how greasy is it there, how hot is it outside, is the sun shining on your work, etc...

I also have a Steamer, but have never really needed it for this part of the Detail..

TAW is my preferred product to use . It's very mild - hence the longer dwell time.

If I use something like a Apc, I'll just spray, scrub and rinse.

It's faster with APC but like TAW
