*I'D* wash it first, if only so a) less chance of marring the finish, you don't want to inadvertently rub in some dirt and b) you can see what you get when the badge(s) comes off- maybe you'll need to polish, etc. anyhow.
For the heating, I'd just try moving the heat source around a little more and heating a little longer. I assume you're "flossing" the badge while you're heating (I use waxed dental floss, NOT fishing line).

Yeah, I'd wash it too. For exactly the reasons Accumulator said. You'd hate to grind some dirt in while you're busy on the badge.
I'd also floss it like he said. Then you only have to remove the remaining thin layer of adhesive, and you should have no problems warming it up. Though, I think we are assuming you mean a factory badge which is foam backed, and not some dealer decal or something (which you couldn't floss).

Yeah, I WAS assuming that. But I have used the floss to help with the decals, too (once I got 'em started). I'm ALSO assuming that the badge(s) in question are KNOWN to be merely glued on, NOT mounted with pins. Always pays to verify this first, or at least be VERY careful so you can pop 'em back on if there ARE pins/holes. e.g., on my old Outback, one of the three badges on the hatch (the "Legacy" one) was pinned (AND glued) while the other two were just glued.

Sounds like you do. This time of year, I just face the side with the emblems towards the sun. In about 30 minutes, once I am done washing the vehicle, the adhesive is nice and warm and soft.
