dark blue Porsche - correction

Hello all,

Sorry to beat a dead horse on boar's hair brushes, but I still find it hard to believe that Griot's brush would damage the paint.

Here are my points of contention:

1. Griots only sells quality products (agreed sometimes over priced)

2. The catalog for their brush even claims some brushes are interlaced with nylon fibers to provide rigidity for the boar's hair. These nylon fibers are what typically damage the surface of your paint. The Griots brush does not contain these fibers.

3. My car is black and I do see some "spider web" scratches, you know the kind that are very fine and only show in certain light. However, I am not convinced that these are from the brush. They may have been caused by using a car duster, or course cotton towels with a spray on "quick detailer". I no longer use those towels!

4. I have a rear bumper cover that was freshly painted and has only been washed with the Griot's boar's hair brush. I have tried to see if the brush has produced any new scratches in it but to date I have not seen anything. This leads me to believe that the Griot's brush is better than the typical boars hair brush.

5. My wife has a yellow car, and sometimes the tire dressing will fling off the tires on to the side of the car. When I wash her car with the boars hair brush there is not even enough abrasion to remove the tire dressing that has flung on to the car. I will typically have to get my mitt to wipe this off. If the boars hair brush is so abrasive, how come it won't even wipe off something I can wipe off with my fingers?

And just for the discussion, why would Griot's sell a boars hair brush, and a sheepskin wash mitt, but no chenille mitt?

Again, I am not convinced that the Griot's brush is as abrasive as some of the others, and I do believe that there are boars hair brushes that could be damaging to your car's finish.

Thanks!

Welcome Chip!!!!

It is not the brush but what the brush drags around that can scratch. Soft towels do not scratch but the dirt they drag around does. Now some brushes may scratch (extreme example is brass) and your boars hairs may not scratch but the dirt scratch.

If you have proper cleasning techniques you will probably have no problems.

For proper cleaning the dirt needs to be lifted up into the cleaning device nd held away from the paint to prevent scratching...then when the cleaning device is rinsed the dirt should float away into the water so it is clean again and can hold more dirt.

I totally agree, that's why I have a difficult time believing the Griots brush is the culprit.

I use the 2 bucket method, and never do more than a door/fender at a time before rinsing the brush. I also break the hood/roof in to 2 wash/rinse sections.

When I did a search on boars hair brush there were an exorbinant amount of posts saying not to use the brush. I read about tests using CD-Rs as the testing medium etc....

I still believe, in my own blissful ignorant way, that the Griots brush is superior to the brush you would buy at Pep Boys, and I agree that there probably are brushes that would damage the paint.

Thanks for the reply!

Question Chip:

Why not use a high quality 100% cotton wash mitt or wash sponge???

How do you ensure you do not ding the paint with the handle and bristle holder thingy???

If you are happy with what you are doing keep doing it!!!

Success is in your eyes.

I wish I had an answer for you! The only reason I use the brush is because Griots said it was the best thing for washing the car.

I don't think it has caused problems with my paint, but I must admit there is a certain level of fear, uncertainty and doubt after reading the messages here.

Thanks!

Chip

Forgot about the price as compared to a $3 viking 100% cotton mitt. Big savings mean buying other things!!! YEAH!:bounce

Here's my problem with Griots, they will claim that the brush is the best method for washing your car when it clearly isn't....sure its the best, it cost like $70. I have used it and it scratched more than anythinhg else i have used. Your best bet, stop listening to Griots, get sme nice cotton chenille wash mitts.

Who/where can you recommend buying these?

Thanks!:D

Every person that I know that has tried a boars hair brush has not liked it. No matter what they say, they DO scratch. :down

Hmm.... This is the same Griots that sells that PC accessory that lets you clay the car with the PC?

Nooooo thanks.

the owner just got the car and wonder if any improvement can be made.
initial condition has severe swirls and holograms from improper washing and drying.
after the car was wash and clayed , a test spot was done on rear pillar/fender.
from initial condition with 1 step was achieve 80-95% correction.
the winner was 1 step machine polisher , meguiar`s 205 and hex polish pad on DA. the car was ipa wipe down clean.
as protection 1 coat of opti-seal , and 1 coat of blackfire wet diamond.

I love that color on a car that has beautiful lines like this Porsche.

Thanks for sharing, the pic with the blue metallic showing is outstanding!

I need to get a camera like yours someday - what is it ?
