Cyclo versus PC versus Rotary

Axe- I'd certainly get the Cyclo instead of the PC rotary. IMO you'll get a lot more use out of it. I haven't used my rotary in ages but I use the Cyclo for every detail.

The kit you linked looks good, but I'd get a *lot* of pads while you're already paying shipping (as Sullybob suggested). I buy 'em a dozen or more at a time, and I'm not a pro.

Yeah, get quite a few of the green polishing pads, that's what you'll probably use most. Add a few more cutting pads (since they wear fast and I like them under the MF bonnets- I keep one pair labeled for just this use) and a few more finishing pads so you can try them with different LSPs. Be forewarned, there will probably be a bunch of velcro "slubs"/fragments on the white pads, and they're a bit of a pain to clean off

Just to add to what 'Mark77' said - there are a number of places in the UK where you can get a Cyclo polisher. You just have to look a bit harder than normal. I've seen them on a few website before, but I just can't remember where! The Autosmart website was one of them.

Axe... I presume you've been hunting around for prices on the Makita? What's the best deal you've come up with? I'm currently looking into getting the Makita.

I haven't actually been checking prices PugoMan, however one of the best places I have found in the UK on prices (of electrical goods generally) is screwfix, and they have this makita in at 169.00 inclusive including delivery http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=91743&ts=03347 However if it were me, I would purchase it from here http://www.topoftheline.com/makrotpol.html assuming that the power supply is not a problem, and it might be! That comes to 107 or so UKP plus delivery .... maybe 135.00 all in. (Unless you have to pay VAT) which would bring it up to our screwfix price, so screwfix possibly ? :)

Not sure if its the right one?

I was looking at this too http://www.topoftheline.com/metabopolisher.html

Regarding the uk prices on Cyclo, lets just say it will be MUCH cheaper to import from the states ... silly money here!

Axe... I can get a Cyclo for £149.95 +VAT - which is kinda tempting. What prices have you come up with?

Screwfix will probably be my choice if I do decide to go for the rotary... I'm not gonna get a rotary from the USA, as I'd need to purchase another transformer, my current one is perfect for the PC but not up to running a rotary.

Well, I just went and bought a Cyclo from winners circle, and a shed load of pads, including the new carpet and upholstery brush heads ... thanks to everyone for helping me make this decision, can't wait to give it a go. :)

Axe... I'd be interested to hear how you get on with your new purchase. I'm now swaying between the Cyclo and Makita!

OK Pugoman, I shall do a review of my experience once I have the device and had a go or two :)

IMO, the cyclo is a wonderful tool and now that Iâ€â„¢ve sold it, Iâ€â„¢m already starting to miss the nice whirring sound of its motor. However, *I* have found it to be just marginally more efficient at removing surface defects than the PC. Better than the PC? Yes!....but still not enough of a difference to write home about. When trying to correct something thatâ€â„¢s just beyond the capabilities of a PC, I would much rather borrow my neighborâ€â„¢s rotary and be done with it quickly instead of using a cyclo.

So I guess for me, the cyclo doesnâ€â„¢t really fill a detailing niche between the PC and the rotary. Instead, itâ€â„¢s replaces the noisy, hand-tingling PC with a machine unmatched in quality and craftsmanship. So for me, the ideal combo would be a Makita/Metabo/Dewalt rotary accompanied by the cyclo. BTW, has anyone seen the Golden Anniversay Cyclo from TOL??? Hehe, very niceâ€Â¦

On a side note, the first time I used a rotary, it was on my wifeâ€â„¢s black BMW. My first thoughts were that this machine isn't anywhere near as "dangerous" as I thought it was going to be. In fact, I found it 'difficult' to ruin your paint if you keep the speed at 1,200 and below. I would have no qualms at all about using one on a very expensive car.

They need to accessorize the Cyclo- thats the main problem IMHO ! Not enough unique pads dedicated to the cyclo and how it operates !

I think that the cyclo is getting a better varity of pads. Lake County is making pads, you can get various brush heads for it, MF bonnets and a special pad that can do rotary level work is in testing right now.
