Cyclo Guide/Usage FAQ?

Tort- Lucky you being so close to TOL! Heh heh, it's probably a good thing I'm not located too close to a company like that ;)

Think I'll order some of that H-T HC next time I'm giving Irene some business. Finishing out OK with the *yellow* pads is something!

Accumulator,

Not TOL. Hi-Temp is one of TOL's suppliers; they blend and bottle their stuff right here in Omaha.

I am fortunate that HT is so close . . . I know that if I run out of darn near anything, they'll have a product that's roughly equivalent, and will work pretty well (may not be the best, but it definitely won't suck).

I bought a quart of HC last time I was in; if you care to PM me your address, I can try to get a sample bottle out to you. I'll add a caveat to my statement on finishing with yellow . . . you probably wouldn't get away with it on black, but on light colors and lighter metallics, it does a pretty decent job. I haven't used it with a green pad yet (seems I'm always getting the neglected beaters to work on these days, so I need the cut from yellow), but my guess is it will work pretty well.

OK, gotcha.

Heh heh, could've used that sample a few weeks ago when I was doing my mechanic's loaner :D Check your PMs...

As the o.p I'm finding this thread very interesting - I've just had my bunch of pads and towels from Winners Circle and now I need to have a bit of a chew on what polishes and stuff to buy as the only thing I have right now is Autoglym SRP and Carlack, I suspect I want something like the Sonus/Menzerna/Poorboys line but boy how to choose..? :)

I like the SRP by Cyclo (with finishing pads). I generally prefer it over AIO and AIO is *not* a Cyclo-friendly product.

If I had to live without my (discontinued but still available) 3M PI-III stuff, I'd get Hi-Temp Heavy Cut for the aggressive work (based on TortoiseAWD's advice, which I'll take to the bank) and Menzerna for the milder stuff. I might end up getting the H-T Heavy Cut anyhow..

I used my Cyclo this weekend. Started with the Green Cyclo pad and Hi Temp Light Cut. Did a 1x1 ft section of my hood in my driveway. I could see an immediate difference in the finish. Looked good.

BUT under close inspection in the sun....micro marring in the section that I polished. The section is now in worse shape than it was to start with. What was the cause of the marring? The Green pad or the Hi Temp Light Cut? I tried 1Z Paint Polish (green can) with the Green Cyclo pad. It did nothing.

I finally got rid of the marring using the LC White pad and Optimum Polish. This removed the marring. I finished the section with the Cyclo White pad and Menzerna PO85RD. WOW!!

I have got to say, that to me, the Cyclo is a big step up over the Porter Cable. No vibrations. Ease of use in that I did my entire car in half the time compared to the PC. And... I got results that I was never able to achieve with the PC.

Hard to say if it was the pad or the product, I'd just say it was the *combination*. If the 1Z PaintPolish/green didn't do anything (good *or* bad) then I'd tend to think it was the H-T LC. Maybe you'll just have to reserve that for serious correction and stick with combos like the LC white/OP and Cyclo white/PO85RD. Just have to find what works for the particular job in question.

I'd *guess* that the Cyclo green/OP then Cyclo white/PO85RD would be a good progression, but nothing wrong with using the LC pads instead.

Glad to hear the Cyclo's working out so well for you!

Thanks Accumulator.

I was a little disapointed with the Green Cyclo and the Light Cut. I did not think I would get all the marring that I did. I was lucky too that I looked at it closely right away as it looked good if you looked quick but under close inspection in the sun...MARRING!! If I would have done my entire car and then looked at it in the sun, I would have fallen on the ground :)

Based on what I have read, the Green Cyclo should have worked. So maybe it ws the combo...or...maybe I did not apply enough product to the pad. I put about 2 pea sized drops on each pad and went to work. Was that enough? Maybe the pad was too dry?

I will give the Green Cyclo pad another go this time using Optimum. I have an old fender in my garage for this sort of thing :)

And I got to say that I did not have much luck with Optimum Polish and the PC. Worked like a charm with the Cyclo. :)

That's a great example of why it pays to check your progress :xyxthumbs

I prime my pads by rubbing product into them. I make sure the whole pad is primed/lubed this way before I star polishing. Yeah, maybe dry areas of the pads contributed to the marring. Also, with the Cyclo you gotta keep checking the pads as you work, as sometimes the product on the outer portions of the pad dries/cakes quicker than one might expect.

Sounds like the OP/Cyclo combo works well.

So rubbing some product down into the pad should be sufficient? A few guides I've read (all PC focused) suggest a spray of QD etc but I figured that even if it's only slightly that dilutes and "messes" with the product you're using?

FWIW I've settled on the Menzerna range, I'm going to order some PO85RD and PO106FF and probably try it on my current car to get a little practice before the new one arrives.

I never prime my PC/Cyclo pads with a QD, but I *do* do this with #34 when using the rotary.

Although I'm usually being a fanatic about *not* using a lot of product, I do make sure I have plenty on/in my Cyclo's pads before I start polishing. You don't want so much that you get sling or anything like that, but remember that the product provides lubrication as well as cut. I bet a little more experience will go a long way.

Paul,

if you want some 3 inch pads, go to your local brown brothers, they're £1.99 + vat each. I got some for my biltema. posted on DW. I found the 4inch pads to rub on mine.

I've had some marring issues on softer paint with the green pads too. Anyone use the Propel pads with the Cyclo? The green pad they have has a softer surface feel to it but similarly open cell design.

Scott,

I have been testing Propel's Green with the Cyclo, and so far, it works quite well with ZPC and FPII.

I really like the way the cyclo lays down 845 with the cyclo finishing pads, very thin and even.

What Cyclo pads would you use on a Cyclo for the Menzerna PO twins? I want to try my new stuff this weekend on my current car which is a Saab with fairly moderate swirling.

Paul,

I have an 01 Saab 95 Aero in Laser Red.

The Green Cyclo and Hi Temp Light Cut left a lot of marring. I got rid of the marring left behind by this combo with Optimum Polish and the LC White Pad. This also got rid of all the swirls on my car. (Swirls were not that bad) I finished with PO85RD and the White Cyclo pad. That brought up that last bit of wetness to the paint. Pinnacle Signature II afterwards.
