After going to three stores and only finding steel paint roller grids, I got fed up with the whole idea and quit looking. I'm sure anything other than aluminum or plastic will rust.
My next step will be to check for:
1. Aluminum expanded metal. I kind of like this idea if the stuff is available. I could cut it and bend it to fit and be off the bottom of the bucket.

2. Light grid panels. RAYJAY's system could work for me.

3. Plastic or aluminum paint roller grids. I haven't totally given up on the idea, but finding them has been more of a problem than I expected. Menard's, Home Depot, and Walmart had only the steel ones. Next stops, Target and Ace Hardware. If we have a true "Paint Store" in town, I'll check there after Target & Ace.

Since I have managed without a grit guard for the year or so I have been using rinseless washes and a whole bunch of years using conventional hose & bucket washes, it isn't really a "have to have" item for me just yet.

And yet another possibility.
Aluminum expanded metal gutter guards.
Cheap, easy to cut and bend, should be readily available at Menard's, Lowes, or Home Depot.
They wouldn't be the answer for round buckets, but just may work in my narrow rectangular bucket. :dunno:

Gotta love it! 23 posts on homemade grit guards. I love this place!!!

Seriously, some great ideas all from Charles asking for an inexpensive solution to a uniquely shaped application.

Keep in mind that I would be glad to pay the $10 to $15 price for a grit guard that would fit the bucket I'm using.
So far, I have not had to make a special trip to any of the places I have checked since I was driving by them anyway. Home Depot, Menard's, Walmart and Target are all within about three blocks of each other and I drive by them several times a week. If I had to drive to these places just to check, I would be well over $15 in travel cost. (And I still don't have anything.) :wall

A lot of detailer's are budding engineers. With us mobile guys it is out of necessity especially in my case where I am space challenged.

Remember these? :rofl

Can't believe Meguiar's hasn't come up with something to compete wiith them yet. :crazy2:

I don't remember the post but I sure do think it is funny, Troy!

Charles W...Since you live in Iowa I am sure that you live near or drive by a hog confinement, local elevator or feed supply company that sells rubber coated mesh wire that could be cut to shape and resealed with rubberized paint to keep it from rusting and to make it soft yet would not move around when the bucket is in use. If I were in Inwood, Iowa I would simply go to my brother's farm to cut and make ready a piece just to your specification.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I may have it handled. :)

The aluminum gutter cover seems like it might just be the answer.
I cut it about 1" shorter than the length of the compartment and the cover is about 1" wider than the compartment. It was formed in a slightly curved shape and after I placed it in the bucket I just pushed down on the curve until it was relatively flat.
It is about 1.5" above the bottom of the bucket and I don't see any reason why it won't do the job.
$2.06 including tax, 5 minutes of work, two days and a lot of conversation got it done. :bigups
The temperature is only 5 degrees so it won't get much of a test for some time.
Thanks for all the suggestions and encouragement. :bow

Looks great! Plus it looks like they won't fall out when you empty the bucket. What are the R and E arrowed reminders for?

My writing skills mirror my photography skills. :)
It is supposed to be R and W.
In case you haven't guessed, R = Rinse, W = Wash.
It probably isn't necessary since I use the same solution in both the rinse and the wash compartments. It was suggested that I do that to keep from diluting the wash solution with plain water from the rinse side.
That may be unnecessary, but it doesn't seem to be hurting anything.
