Custom Grit Guard?

CharlesW

The Rainmaker
While I haven't really looked into what materials might be available, I think I would like to try to make a grit guard to fit the double compartment bucket I use for rinseless washing.
Is the regular grit guard such that it could be cut to fit? It doesn't have to fit very good, just good enough to wipe a wash mitt/sponge against.
Any ideas?

This is the bucket I use.

Charles look into Rubbermaid....we have a very thick plastic sink liner...it could be cut to fit the bottom of that bucket...Here is a link with pic of what I am talking about

Thanks. :bigups
The liner might not be thick enough for what I think I need, but your suggestion will take me to the kitchenwares department to look at the plastic coated wire baskets for storage that are available. One of those turned upside down might do the trick. :)
I'll check out the mats as well.

You might try using a milk crate, what I mean is cut a piece of it the same lenth as the bucket but leave it a bit wider than the bottom half of the side you are using it on. This way you can have it at a appx. 45 degree angle, this will prevent the mitts laying in the grime and also give you something to wipe your mit with.

Another good idea. Thanks. :)
I also thought a rack that set at an angle could work.
I don't really need to be able to set the mats on a grit guard since the wash media I'm using floats. I'm just looking for something to rub a sponge over to knock off any loose dirt. It may not even be necessary, but it's something to play with and it doesn't cost a lot of money to experiment. :D

I use to use a plastic spaghetti collander (sp?) back before they came out with the Grit Guard. I'd be curious to know if anyone produces a square or rectangular one that might be cut to fit. Just a thought.

Charles

You guys have a janitorial suppler in your area....the ones that I have here have all kinds of buckets and guards that go in them...could be an interesting look...I buy a lot of cleaners and things from the local ones here

Definitely gonna have to hit the kitchenwares department. Thanks.

I'm sure we do, I just don't know where they are. I'll check the yellow pages.

How about of of those plastic pieces that they have for paint cans.

A while back someone suggested using one of those sand sifters that you would find in a childs beach toy, you the know one with the shovel and the pail

I don't do paint so I don't know what this is.

Won't those be round?
I need something to fit into a compartment about 4" to 5" wide and 12" to 14" long.
Hopefully, I will get to Target to check in the next few days. If all else fails, I will even try Walmart. :wall

One another forum someone discussed cutting an egg crate. Not sure what an egg crate is, but google it.
Also, what about cutting a light diffuser....an egg crate light diffuser.
Something like this:
Eggcrate Louvers (EGGCRATE LOUVERS) - Order Online
Those were one of the first things that came to mind, but I was concerned that they would be somewhat fragile for this use. Anyone had any experience with them?
I guess I could go to Home Depot and see how easy one is to break. :notme:

I would be glad to. Please direct me to where I can buy a grit guard to fit the double bucket I show in the first post in the thread.

Wash buckets with and without conventional grit guards are all over the internet.
I don't want one of those.

What I want is a grit guard to fit this bucket.

If a conventional grit guard will work in this bucket, send me two of them. I'll Pay Pal you the money as soon as you have a total price.

Like the idea, Charles. I would definitely buy a grit guard shaped for the double bucket.

I have wondered if there is any demand for a slanted GG, similar in concept to the old fashioned washboard and basins used for doing laundry by hand. :exactly:

x2 on the paint screen, they come in plastic and metal and there are a couple of sizes, they are not round and would hang right on the bucket.

I had seen someone who used a flourescent light grate and cut to bucket dimension. One normal light grate could make several grit guards. It is amazing that less than a $1 plastic could cost $10 with no one discounting it. If walmart sold them, it would be $2.50....same about of plastic as any bucket.

On a side note, I just do not see that much price competition among sellers. Yes, they have these secret discounts and promotions but no one is trying to be the walmart of the detail supply work with the more popular brands.

The lower cost private label guys who cater to volume places, etc do not even try to advertise in the autopia (meaning all the major detailing discussion boards) market.

I was wondering the same thing. A slanted grit guard. Hmmm. I'm making a patent right now.:notme:

A Google search for "paint screen" didn't bring up much of anything.
A Google search for "paint grid" also wasn't very productive.
And a Google search for "paint screen grid wasn't much better.
But, "paint grid screen" brought up several and it looks like that might be an answer.
I had never seen one or at least not to know what it was used for. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. :)
